Finally, it was Friday. School was halfway over, and it was lunchtime. Gordie and Chris sat alone at first, but Vern soon came and sat near them, shortly followed by Teddy. They had all been hanging out during school more often.
"Hey, do you guys wanna help us finish a treehouse we're building?" Gordie asked.
"Ah, yeah, man! That sounds boss," Vern said.
"I'm in," Teddy said.
"Well, I guess we'll see you guys then," Gordie said cheerfully. They continued talking about nonsense until lunch was finally over and they rushed off to class.
When school was finally over, the four boys met up outside the school. Together, they walked to where Chris and Gordie had begun making the treehouse. They needed a few more things, but the didn't know where they could get it.
"Wait, we can find some old stuff lying around at Milo's junkyard," Teddy suggested. Once they had all the supplies they needed from the junkyard, they immediately began working on the treehouse. Soon, the sun was setting.
"Me and Gordo here will finish this up tomorrow. You guys can come Sunday and check it out," Chris said. They all agreed, and started walking home. Vern was the first to turn off the main path, soon followed by Teddy. Finally, Chris and Gordie went their separate ways, saying goodbye.
As soon as Gordie woke up, he threw on some clean clothes and ran downstairs to eat breakfast, which he ate in silence as everyone was too busy talking about Denny.
At his house, Chris was also doing the same thing. As soon as he had finished his breakfast, he rushed out the door and to the nearly-finished treehouse.
Just a few minutes later, Gordie arrived.
"Wow, you're already working?" Gordie asked.
"If by working you mean throwing the hammer to see if I can hit a nail, then yes," Chris said. Gordie grinned. They quickly got to work and were finished around noon.
"That took less time than I thought it would," Chris said.
"Yeah," Gordie agreed. He ran past Chris and to the ladder, climbing up.
"Oh no you don't, Lachance!" Chris yelled, trying to pry Gordie off the ladder. Gordie fell and landed on Chris. They stayed like that for a few minutes, both lying on the ground, laughing.
"There is no way I'm letting you in that treehouse first," Chris said.
"Why not?"
"It was my idea!"
"Yeah, well, how about you just be the last one out?" Gordie suggested.
"Or you can be the last one out," Chris said.
"Flip for it?"
"Yeah. Heads I win, tails you lose," Chris said, flipping a coin. "I win," Chris said. Gordie now noticed his fault in agreeing to this game. He looked annoyed.
"Well, I guess I'm going first," Chris said.
"Suck it," Gordie huffed.
"No thanks," Chris said.
