Days later, Chris and Gordie were alone in the treehouse. Their feet were entangled in a flirtatious manner, but nothing was being said. They were supposed to be studying, but Chris was busy trying to joke around with Gordie whenever possible, and Gordie was focused on their feet.
"Chris, can I ask you something?" Gordie asked.
"You just did, but yeah, man, go ahead," Chris said with a slight smirk.
"What are we?" Gordie asked. Chris froze.
"What?" Chris asked.
"What are we?" Gordie repeated.
"I don't know," Chris said honestly. "What do you want us to be?"
"I don't know," Gordie lied. He knew exactly what he wanted.
"I mean, we're friends, but we're not," Chris said.
"We're best friends that kiss and flirt," Gordie stated. Chris moved next to Gordie.
"Or we're more than friends that are more friendly than other people who are more than friends," Chris said.
"Yeah," Gordie said.
"But we could always change that," Chris said, turning his head so that his face was inches from Gordie's.
"But we need to talk," Gordie choked.
"We already talked," Chris said quietly. Gordie tensed slightly.
"W—" Gordie began, but Chris cut him off.
"You're not gonna win this," Chris said in a low voice, almost touching Gordie's face with his own. When Gordie didn't attempt to speak again, Chris closed the gap between them, kissing Gordie. Gordie pulled away for a second to say one smart remark.
"Well, you're kissing me, so I'm pretty sure I'm winning," Gordie said, pulling Chris back in for another kiss. Chris stopped him to respond.
"Stop being so gay," Chris said, jokingly.
"You're more gay than I am," Gordie replied.
"No, Gordo. If anyone's gay here, it's you," Chris said.
"You're kissing a guy," Gordie stated.
"So are you," Chris said.
"Yeah, but I never said I wasn't gay. I just said you were more gay," Gordie said.
"Gordie, I swear to God, if you use that word one more time—" Chris began.
"What word? Gay?" Gordie asked.
"Gordie, you're overusing it," Chris said laughing.
"Gay gay gay gay gay! You are gay!" Gordie sang.
"That's it!" Chris said, tackling Gordie and pinning him down.
"Oh look, you're doing more gay things," Gordie said.
"Stop saying that word," Chris said, laughing.
"You can't make me!" Gordie said.
"I'll throw you in the creek," Chris threatened.
"Actually, that's a good idea. We should all go to the creek tomorrow afternoon," Gordie said.
"You sure you won't end up exposing your gay-ness?" Chris asked, smirking.
"You sure you won't expose yours?" Gordie asked.
"Why are you always such a bitch?" Chris asked, laughing.
