Hybrids

Harry's POV

The year was 2092.

I was walking around town.

I needed to buy some food for the small apartment my two best friends, Liam and Louis, and I share.

I'm Harry. Luckily I'm human.

If I wasn't I would be sent outside the dome.

The dome protects humans from the many dangerous hybrids outside of it. It is a large, sphere-like thing that covers the parts of the UK that the government decided to keep the hybrids away from. The material it is made out of is see-through and sends something similar to an electric shock to those who touch it.

I've touched it once. It burned me. One learns to never make that mistake twice.

The reason it sends such a painful feeling is to keep the hybrids as far away from the dome as possible.

Hybrids are part human, part animal.

I've been told there are many different types. One thing each one has in common is the obvious danger they present.

They live to kill. Even if I was a hybrid, I probably wouldn't last long out there 'cause they kill each other when the urge makes itself present.

Hybrids were created by a group of scientists. They, for some reason, thought it would be a brilliant idea to combine people with animals. As they kept creating more and more, some were able to escape. As the years passed, they could reproduce. Now there is enough for them to be considered a serious threat to society.

Finally after a few years of constantly hearing stories about the ruthless acts of murder the hybrids were committing, the government got their shit together and made domes across the planet that humans could live under. All hybrids were then captured and sent out.

How do you know so much about hybrids, you ask?

There are banners and posters scattered all over the town's and cities, that tell you of the danger, and how to protect yourself if you somehow manage to come face to face with one. I personally think they're ridiculous. With the dome up, there should be no worry about  hybrid attack.

I sigh as I see one now. It illustrates a cat hybrid with ears and a long tail, claws out, and sharp canine teeth. It appears to be angrily lunging at some unknown object. Under the picture a caption said to 'Beware'.

I shuddered as I continued walking, accidentally letting a few tears fall. Another reason I hated these posters: they force me to remember that hybrids exist. They force me to remember my family.

Before the domes, I would often be hiding in my house because of the hybrids on the loose.

I would hide in the basement. My family would often try to make me come out but I wouldn't listen because I knew, one day they would come.

And they did.

One night, a couple of them broke into my family home.

They murdered my parents and sister. Fortunately (although in some ways unfortunately), I was in my usual hiding spot so they never found me. I still feel guilty to this day that I survived when they didn't.

I lost myself after that. The trauma of witnessing my family's slaughter was too much for me to handle.

When news of my parent's and sister's death came out, I had no one else to live with. Lucky for me, my best friend Liam's family were ready to accept me with open arms.

I met Louis through Liam since they were neighbors. These two became my new family. The three of us were just like brothers from that day forward.

Now, Louis 21, Liam 19, and myself 19, we moved into an apartment to try and transition into adult life. So far, I am the only one with a job. The other two have yet to find the motivation to get one.

I am still terrified of hybrids. When I was younger I would have horrible dreams of hybrids attacking my family. More times than not, I would wake up screaming. Liam's mom would have to calm me down. The nightmares stopped after a few months. My head may have been repaired but my heart never would be.

I shook my head, not wanting to think about it anymore.

I had been so deep in thought that I didn't notice I was nearly to the apartment. I picked up the pace to get to the front door quicker.

My arms were about ready to fall off as I dropped the recently purchased groceries inside the kitchen.

"Liam? Louis?" I called their names.

I didn't get an answer.

I looked around a bit until I saw a note on the counter.

Louis and I went out for a walk, we will be back soon!

~Liam

I rolled my eyes and began putting the food away.

I sighed when I finished and walked to the couch.

I flicked on the TV and found a movie.

I was nearly asleep when the other two idiots barged through the door. They were cackling as they came inside.

"What's so funny?"

"Liam told a yo mama joke and it was hilarious!" Louis said through fits of laughter.

"Oh really?" he nodded.

"Tell him Liam!" Louis encouraged.

"It's not that funny," Liam smiled widely, "I'm just laughing at Louis's reaction."

"Well come on, you can't not tell me now," I nodded, encouraging Liam to speak.

"Yo mama so fat, when God said, 'Let there be light,' he had to ask her to move out of the way."

Louis fell to the floor laughing, while Liam and I just chuckled at his ridiculousness.

After the laughter had mostly stopped, I checked the time.

My phone lit up as I pressed the home button. 11:30 already?

"Well, you guys, I'm going to bed," I said, standing and stretching.

"Alright, goodnight Harry," Liam said.

Louis was already passed out on the couch. Laughing must have wore him out.

I trudged to my room and fell face first into the bed. I didn't feel like getting up to put pajamas on so I just flipped over and shut my eyes.

As I was drifting off I heard a small rustling noise.

I opened my eyes, groggily, and looked around my room. Nothing was out of place.

I was getting ready to close my eyes again when I heard it once more. It was coming from outside.

I sat up this time and looked out my window.

Coming up with nothing again, I groaned in annoyance and laid back down.

Just before I could drift off to sleep, I saw a pair of eyes appear from my bedroom window. Fear shot through me as I noticed they were glowing a bright blue. Slit pupils replaced a usual circle.

However, my mind was so exhausted that, before I could help it, I was swept into unconsciousness.
