I woke up to someone banging around in my kitchen. Judging by the sound, the person was either mad or looking for something. I groaned as I sat up. Bright light shone through my bear windows and shot straight into my eyes, blinding me.
"What are you doing Devon?" I asked.
"What?" Devon groaned. He layed on the floor, his body sprawled out in all directions.
My eyes widened, "If you're right here than who's-" I was cut off by a loud bang in my kitchen. Devon quickly stood up and pulled on his jeans from the night before. Devon always slept in his underwear, no matter how cold it was.
Both Devon and I tip-toed into the kitchen and I quietly opened the door. Jack stood at cabinets opening and shutting them loudly. He spun around and looked around the room once again. He didn't stop until he noticed me and Devon starring him with wide eyes.
"Melinda..." He croaked. "Why is everything gone?"
"I've told you, Jack. I am moving." I said to him.
Jack stepped closer and the scent of alcohol hit my nose. He was drunk. Again. Ever since the night I caught him with one of my coworkers, he would call me, drunk as hell. Saying how sorry he was and how much he wanted me back. For weeks, that was all I had hoped for. But after a month of hearing nothing from him, I had given up.
Devon stepped in front of me. "Jack, you're not in your right mind. I think its time you go home. Here, let me call you a cab." He said as he sat his hand on Jack's shoulder.
Jack shoved Devon off to the side, and walked closer to me. Devon caught his balance and was about to push Jack back, but I held up my hand to stop him.
"Why are you here?" I asked Jack.
"I came to talk to you. About what happened." His voice slurred as his breath burned my nose.
"Jack there is nothing to talk about. Its all in the past. We can't change that." I said.
"But I could always change your opinion about me."
No, no he couldn't. He hurt me too much. I didn't have the strength to deal with him this early in the morning. I looked over at Devon.
"Message received." He said. He bent Jack's arm behind his back and wrapped his other arm around Jack's neck. Jack yelped and clawed at Devon's arm. Devon didn't care and quickly dragged Jack to the door. I opened it and he threw Jack out of the door. Jack hit the floor with a loud thud and I shut the door on his face.
I turned back to Devon, he looked me in the eyes. I stood, glued to that very spot, starring at my best friend. I tried to maintain my cool, but something in me broke.
Oh wait I know.
My heart.
I dropped to my knees and cried, thinking of the night at Jack's apartment. Devon hugged me and patted my back. I sat there for almost ten minutes crying into Devon's shoulder. I haven't cried on Devon's shoulder ever since the day I got fired from my last job.
I was a cashier at the local food market and apparently I had stolen something from the store. So, in result, I was fired. The thing is, I actually liked the job. I was around food, which for me is amazing. Because I love food.
Who doesn't am I right?
I wiped my eyes and stood, Devon stood up with me. "Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'll be fine." I said. I walked back over to my sleeping bag and layed down on it. Devon picked up his stuff and put them into his bag.
"We better put the rest of the boxes in the car and go get my stuff." He said.
I nodded. He was right, if we wanted to make it to Texas in a matter of days, its best we started now.
I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. I looked terrible, my make-up from last night was smeared and my eye liner ran down my cheeks from the crying. I sighed and changed into different clothes.
I cleaned my face off and reapplied make-up. I looked into the mirror once last time and kissed the past good bye.
Because I am sure as hell not going back there.
