Chapter Seven

The humming of the car’s engine soothed my adrenaline rush. It also ebbed the uncomfortable silence between Col and me. Ever since we had driven out of that god forbidden park in a mad rush, nothing but a grunt was uttered between us. I had managed to scrounge up a rag from the cluttered glove box, to stop the flow of blood coming from my hip.

When I had noticed that Col was driving towards the hospital, I immediately stopped him and basically forced him to take me home saying that my brother was a ‘doctor’. And technically that wasn’t a lie. He almost finished a whole year of med school.

Col had put up a pretty impressive argument with flailing hands and everything. But like almost all my arguments with dad and Flynn I got the last word in. And that was how I sat here awkwardly in the passenger seat of Col’s borrowed car. Regretting the explanation of our various weapons in the basement. And worse than that the explanation I would have to give Flynn as to why I was bringing a guy home with me.

I gathered up my courage and pried open the door, letting me feet dangle from the seat before finally setting them on the driveway. The minute I was on my feet the pain in my hip doubled and I gasped from the pain, I bit down on my lip to stop from crying out. This was definitely going to need stiches, another unfortunate event to fall upon this day.

Within seconds I felt a hand on my arm guiding me towards the front door. Although Col might think I am crazy for not going to a hospital he still managed to act like a gentlemen. The knock on the door was greeted by a sweaty Flynn. One look at my pale face and he pulled me inside, almost making me trip.

“What the hell happened to you?” He asked whilst leading me down the stairs to the basement.

“There was a scuffle in the park, involving a gun and a knife. Just a normal day in the office.” I tried my best at laughing but it had no real humor behind it. It honestly was like a normal day, fighting weapons and near-death experiences was what I had grown up with.

“Look at you, bleeding and still managing to tell jokes.” Flynn said, giving me one of his reassuring smiles. “Now sit your ass down, so I can see what you did to yourself this time.”

I stumbled over to the medical corner of the basement, taking a seat on the metal surgical table we had set out. Fortunately we had never actually performed any surgeries, but we were just prepared for anything. The smell of disinfectant hit me in face as I lay my head down on the small pillow that Flynn had laid out to make me more comfortable.

Off to the side I saw him scrub his hands with soap before putting his hands into latex gloves. He wheeled over a small metal table with a suture kit, numbing gel, disinfectant and a bandage. Before sitting down on a stool next to me.

I lifted off the blood covered rag then pulled the hem of my shirt up so that he could look at the open wound. Taking a cotton ball in his hand he squeezed a few drops of disinfectant on it, before rubbing it against the wound. I hissed as it made contact, no matter how much I hurt myself I could never get used to that stinging feeling. Within a few seconds he had cleaned out all the dirt and set to work sewing my skin together.

I watched him apply the numbing gel with the tips of his fingers. It was fascinating that he could be delicately be applying gel to a sensitive wound one minute then turn around and throw someone across the room the next second without even breaking a sweat. I stared at his hands work the needle into my skin, until my head became dizzy and I lay back down before I passed out.

As I stared at the plain ceiling it occurred to me that I hadn’t kept track of Col while Flynn was getting set up. I turned my head a few times until I could make out a silhouette near the wall where we kept the knives. His head was moving up down taking in the many weapons we had collected over the years. Shit, I might have some explaining to do after this.
