Nine Years Ago
"Azi!" I called. "Wait up." I was out of breath after chasing him for so long.
Azi turned a little and bounced a little on his feet. He was excited. "Come on, Naila, it's right up here." He called to me.
"Azi, come on." I said breathing hard. "We're not supposed to be out here."
Azi stopped at the edge of a cliff a few minutes later. He was silent as he stared out at the world. "Come here," He said quietly.
I looked at him for a second before I moved over to him. I was amazed and breathless, due to the sight.
There was a beautiful waterfall pouring over the edge of the cliff. As the rays of light hit the water, the color changed from blue to pink to purple to green.
The pool of water at the bottom was perfectly clear. The sun had the same effect on it as it did on the waterfall.
The trees and bushes were bright green, healthy green. I saw a few trees with an exotic looking fruit hanging from the branches. I never knew that nature could be so beautiful.
Azi smiled at my reaction. "Come on, let's go down." He said excitedly.
"Azi, we're gonna get in trouble." I said. "Our parents are gonna freak."
"It's fine, Naila." He reassured.
We walked down the path. It led to the pool of water. I stared at the water. I desperately wanted to touch it, but I knew better than to.
Azi went over to the pool and ran his hand through the colorful water. He looked up at me as he took his hand from the water. His eyes turned from silver to blue.
I was slightly confused, but thought nothing about it. It wasn't important.
"It's so soft." He said. "And smooth."
I only looked at him. "It's only water." He commented. "It's not gonna hurt you."
I was hesitant, but I walked over. I ran my fingers through the water. I understood immediately.
I cupped my hand and brought the water to my mouth. My nerves disappeared. Everything felt normal, like I was supposed to be there.
"Here," Azi said handing me a fruit. "It's really good." His smile was infectious.
I bit into the fruit. A flood of sugary water rushed into my mouth. It was the best thing I had ever tasted, and my mom was a really good baker.
A half an hour later, we were on our third round of hide and seek. I was counting. I had my hands over my eyes. I reached thirty and looked around.
I ran through the entire area, but Azi was no where to be found. I was starting to panic. I didn't know the way back home, and I was completely alone.
The tears streamed down my face. "Azi!" I called. "Azi, it isn't funny anymore."
There was only the sound of the water as it crashed into the pool.
I sat on the ground and sobbed. He had left me alone. My best friend had left me.
I heard a movement behind me. "Azi?" I whispered looking.
There was a man wearing a hazmat suit, but to my nine-year-old self, it was a monster. The person picked me up.
I screamed as he carried me away.
