Chapter 6
An hour later, Louis came back with three different pregnancy tests. The fact that he willingly drove to the store in the rainy weather made me grateful. Eleanor was a lucky girl.
"I got you three different kinds. Just in case, you know, one's wrong." He said as he dropped them onto the coffee table in front of me.
"Thanks, Louis." I took the pregnancy tests to the bathroom with me. Louis followed me and waited behind the closed door. It was awkward, him being a guy, but I was lucky to have someone. I didn't really stay in touch with my close girl friends.
My hopes were lifted when I did the first pregnancy test. It came out as negative. Phew, maybe I'm not pregnant after all. I read the test's box: '99.9% accuracy." It better be accurate.
"Louis!" I exclaimed with excitement. "It's results came out negative."
"All of them?" His voice was muffled through the door.
"Just the first one, actually."
"Harry's here." Louis responded. We both heard the door from the living room slam shut. "I'll go see him."
Shit. Harry couldn't find out I was doing pregnancy tests. He couldn't find out I was pregnant, period. Not right now at least. I wasn't ready to tell him. Panic rushed through me as I did the next two pregnancy tests. While I waited for the results, I prayed Harry wouldn't walk in to check on me. Especially since there was no freakin' lock.
Three minutes later, the pregnancy test's results appeared. They both read the plus sign. I stared at myself in the mirror. You're going to have a baby in 9 months. All kinds of emotions rushed through my brain. Was I supposed to be happy? Or sad? Should I be mad at James? How would I tell Harry? He is my best friend after all. It shouldn't be so hard to tell him. But maybe it's because I think of him more than a best friend. No you don't. You can't. I thought to myself. In an effort to hide the pregnancy tests, I shoved them to the bottom of the trashcan by the sink.
"Hey Jess." Harry greeted as I walked into the living room.
"Hi Harry." I replied as I took a seat on the couch. Louis began to stare at me. What did he want? I furrowed my eyebrows as I looked back at him. Oh. He wanted to know the remaining pregnancy tests' results.
"What's going on?" Harry questioned. He seemed to catch on, too. A tension filled the room.
"Nothing." Louis laughed, breaking the tension. "I've got to make a phone call."
It was just me and Harry now.
"Can I ask you something, Jess?" Harry ran his fingers through his soft curls.
"Go for it."
"Let me take you out to dinner." He said, avoiding eye contact with me.
"That wasn't a question." I laughed as I lifted one eyebrow at him.
Harry took in a deep breath. "Ok, can I please take you out to dinner?"
"I thought we talked about this. You have a girlfriend." I looked away, shaking my head.
I really did want to go out to dinner with him. I'll admit that. But what about Catherine? What the hell were the press going to say when they see him out dining with a different girl? In fact, I shouldn't even be seen with Harry at all. In the future, his fans could find out I'm pregnant.
"You know, um, just as friends. Best friends." He chuckled. "We haven't hung out in ages. Unless you count camping inside your apartment."
He was right. We never went anywhere together. The only time we used to talk to each other was when I'd call him crying over the phone about my problems. Surprisingly, he never really seemed bothered by it.
