Chapter 11

I awoke to find myself lying in a hospital bed. Two blurs sat at the edge of my bed calling my name. As their bodies came into focus, I was relieved to find Louis and Harry both staring at me with anxious looks across their face.

"You're up!" Louis exclaimed with his cheerfulness on full blast. "Do you remember me?"

"Louis! What happened?" I asked as I stared at the IV plugged into my arm. My whole body ached with pain and soreness.

"You got in a car crash." Louis answered.

"How long was I asleep? Is my baby ok?" I began to interrogate. A feeling of panic rushed through my brain when the thought of my pregnancy came up. No matter how much the baby created a problem in my life I would never give it up for abortion or adoption. I already loved him or her too much.

"Only a few hours, I guess.  The doctor said the baby should be just fine." He let out a huge sigh. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah, just a little dazed." I realized that I wore a cast on my left arm.

"You fractured your wrist. That's all.  I'm glad it wasn't anything more." Louis said as he noticed my eyes were fixed on the cast.

I laid eyes on Harry who was sitting in a corner with his arms crossed. His face made it hard to determine what he was thinking.

"Louis, can you leave the room for a minute?" I asked as politely as I can. I was filled with a sudden bolt of courage and urge to talk to Harry.

"But you just woke up." He protested as he put on a puppy dog face.

"Please."

"Fine, Jess. I'll be waiting outside." Louis finally agreed as he got up to leave. Harry followed.

"Harry, not you." I called out. Biting his lip, Harry turned around and slowly walked back to his seat without a word. He sat with his body slumped and arms crossed, obviously not showing any interest. No words were spoken between us. After a minute or so, I decided to be the one to break the silence.

"Is this how it's going to be between us?" I asked. My tone came out harsher than I intended.

"What are you talking about?" He replied coldly. I watched as he stared outside the hospital window to avoid eye contact with me.

"The way you're acting right now." I retorted. Harry made it very obvious that he didn't want to cooperate and it was beginning to get on my nerves.

"I'm not acting any different than my usual behavior." He argued as he slumped his body even further down his seat to the point where I didn't know it was even possible.

"Yeah, you are." I blurted. I realized this conversation would lead to an argument.

"No, I'm not." He snorted as he burst into a silent laughing fit. Of course he wasn't going to take this seriously.

"Admit it." I continued to bicker with him.

"No." He refused.

"Fine." I gave up. A silence filled the room as we both ran out of words to say. A nurse came in to tell Harry that him and Louis would have to leave since no visitors were allowed after eight unless they were family.

"I'm technically family." Harry told the nurse. The nurse was quite timid. She nodded her head in response before leaving the room. By Harry's body language, she could probably tell Harry wasn't someone she would want to argue with.

"So, why are you acting like this?" I continued to push Harry. I needed to talk to him and get answers. Why did he leave somewhere without telling us?
