I immediately clocked out and headed towards the exit once I left Captain Roger's room. I just wanted to get home and relax. Running across the parking lot, I spotted my 1967 Ruby red Shelby Mustang, climbed in, and headed through the busy New York traffic towards my cozy little house. I parked in the garage and walked inside, quickly greeted by my red Siberian Husky, Mia. I looked to the counter to to see I had three missed calls from my best friend, Jenny. Sighing, I picked up the phone and dialed her number.
She answered on the first ring, "Hellooooo!" She screeched. "Why haven't you answered my calls? Brad fucking broke up with me! He has been cheating on me for three months with some bitch!"
"I am so sorry, Jen...Oh my god..I knew that guy was bad news from the moment you started going out with him...," I sighed.
"I know...I should have listened to you before but I didn't. God, he's such a douche."
"Well, if it makes you feel any better, my day has sucked too."
"Ooooh, what happened?," She squealed. Man, she has a short attention span.
"Well, you know the patient I've been taking care of for a few months now? Well he woke up this morning, and practically killed me. Not to mention, made a fool of himself by bursting out and running in the middle of Times Square." I didn't dare mention that he was frozen in ice for 70 years or that he had super-human strength. That would go against everything I stood for in SHIELD.
"Oh, are you talking about the really hot one? I wonder if he's single! Should I ask him out? I think I totally should!"
I wanted to tell her no, but then she'd think I had a crush on him. Which I don't. Not at all. So instead I said, "Do what you want, Jenny." In a bitter tone. "Listen, I gotta go." I hung up on her in mid-sentence and stalked off to my bedroom.
I crawled in bed with Mia snuggled beside me, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
I stumbled out of bed at 7:00 a.m. the next morning and hopped into the shower. 30 minutes later, I was dressed and on my way to work. I walked into SHIELD headquarters and sprinted to the hospital wing on the right side of the building. I stepped into my office to drop off my things, only to see Agent Coulson sitting in my office chair, twiddling his thumbs.
"Hello, Agent Coulson," I said, surprised. "What can I do for you, Sir?"
"Oh nothing..Just dropping by to bid you a good morning."
"Ah, well, good morning to you too, Sir" I smiled.
"And...Just one more thing."
"Anything, Sir." I replied slightly hesitant.
"I have a new mission for you. I need you to introduce Captain Rogers to the 21st Century. This is a whole new world for him, he can't comprehend everything quite yet. So, in short, your job is to help him find his way. Get him settled in. SHIELD is paying for everything, an apartment, transportation, food, anything he needs."
Wow...I wish SHIELD did this for me, that would be amazing. But I really can't complain, my salary here provides me with everything I need and more.
"Okay, sir. I'll do it. When would you like me to start?" I finally replied.
"At the end of the week, preferably. Dr. Porter still needs to confirm he is okay mentally, or at least okay as he can be. He'll be discharged Friday afternoon."
"Okay, Agent Coulson, I'll take care of everything. He's in good hands." I nodded to him.
"Great. Oh, and one more thing...."
"Yes?"
"Be nice to Rogers. Try to get on his good side, see if he'll talk to you. There's still many things we don't know or understand about Rogers. Things that are necessary for us to know."
I KNEW there was a catch. No mission could possibly be this easy.
I gritted my teeth a bit, but nodded, "Yes, sir. I'll do my best."
"Excellent! I expect you to report any findings or information every Friday, in my office. Have a spectacular afternoon, Agent Daniels. I'll see you around."
With that, he left the room, leaving me a disheveled mess. I did NOT want to lie, let alone trick Captain Rogers into giving me information. I was given orders, though, and I had to follow them.
My day was finally over. Well, not quite. I still had to check up on Captain Rogers for a second time, but I had to admit, I was looking forward to seeing him again. I paused at his room and knocked on the door. I heard his deep voice welcoming me in and I stepped inside to see drawing on an old sketch pad .
"Hello, Captain Rogers," I smiled. "How are you? I just came by to check up on you before I head out."
"Hello, ma'am," He replied. "I'm doing all right, just drawing."
I gave him a quick check-up and was about to head out, when he said,
"Agent Daniels?"
I turned around. "Hm?"
"They think I'm crazy, don't they? I've seen the way my doctor looks at me, like I'm pitiful. I don't like it. I just want you to know, I'm not going to freak out like I did before. I just have to get used to this, that's all."
I looked over at him and smiled. "I understand, Captain Rogers. They're just over-cautious, and I don't think they realize just how strong you really are. By the way, you'll be happy to know you're being discharged Friday."
"Heh, thanks. I feel a bit better now, but where will I go? I don't exactly have a place to stay."
"Don't worry, I'll take care of everything," I said.
"Yes ma'am. So, will I see you tomorrow..?" He asked hesitantly, looking down a bit.
"I wish. I'm off tomorrow, but I'll be here Thursday." I said and frowned.
"Ah..Well I'll see you then." I could clearly see he was disappointed.
"See you then, Captain. Have a pleasant evening."
He nodded, and I left the room, grabbed my things and went home to rest.
