I was in some sort of numb void. Darkness surrounded me like a cloak, but I wasn't sure if it was a comfort or not. I keep getting odd flashes of crumbling walls, fires and rain; unsure of where they were from. I recognised them, but it took me a while to get a vague idea where they were from. I had enough sense to remeber I was supposed to be at school though.
After what seemed like forever and three days, I felt myself being pulled back down to Earth as I slowly regained conciousness. It felt like a wake up where you could hear a beeping sound and you would wake up in hospital, unsure of where you were, but there was no beeping sound, so I assumed that I was at home, in bed and everything was all a dream. I turned my head to the left and opened my eyes like I do every morning to check on my blue fighting fish, Robert, but when I opened my eyes, instead I found myself looking at a view of the city through a window.
I looked around the room and saw that I was in a hospital. I saw the heart machine, but it wasn't making any beeping noises. In fact the room was very quiet for a hospital room, so I assumed I was dreaming, but my legs and various other parts of my body were hurting, so I brushed that thought aside. I felt someone touch my face and saw my mum sitting next to me. There were tears in her eyes and she was moving her mouth as if she was speaking, but I couldn't hear anything except for a numbing silence.
"Mum?" I asked, though no sound came from my mouth. My mum smiled with more silent tears streaming from her eyes. She leant over and kissed me on the forehead. When she sat back up she moved her mouth more, then looked at me expectantly. I wasn't sure what she was trying to say, so I frowned, which caused her to frown. She looked away and I followed her gaze to where a doctor was standing with my father, as if they had just come in, which was odd, because I should have heard them come in. The doctor looked as though he was saying something to me, but I couldn't hear him... I couldn't hear... was... was I deaf? I slowly brought my right hand up the corrosponding ear, but I didn't feel anything blocking my ears. I put my hand down, wincing as I put it down.
The doctor was writing something down on his clip board. He held it up to show me. "Can you hear me?" I shook my head 'no' and instantly regretted it as sharp pains ran through my neck. He frowned and got one of those 'things' that doctors stick in your ears out of his pocket. He walked towards me and stuck it in my ears, one at a time. He spoke to my parents as worry crossed my mum's face. He wrote some more on his clip board. "You have had some serious damage to your ears causing you to be deaf. I am not sure if it is long term or just temporary." All thoughts left my mind except one: I am deaf. I always pitied those who were deaf or blind, never thinking it could happen to me - but it did.
I am deaf.
