~It's not the future you're afraid of. It's repeating the past that makes you anxious.~
Ronnie
I was woken up at 3 am to the sounds of loud banging on my front door. I groaned and stomped to the front door. I swung it open so hard it almost hit the woman standing there. I knew her much to well and in her arms were blankets.
"What do you want?" I snap.
Alejandra hands me the bundle of blankets. "She's your problem now."
I look down at the baby in my arms. Alejandra is my 27 year old ex. We've been on and off for 2 years, but I haven't seen her for the past 5 months. I frown at her. This couldn't be my kid. She would've told me if it was and she sleeps around with every thing with a penis. This couldn't be my child.
"What the hell do you mean?!"
She hands me papers. "I had a DNA test taken. She's yours and I can't take care of her anymore."
"Why?" I ask and Alejandra looks down at her feet.
The cool summer night wind hits me as I try to calm down. I tap my foot getting impatient with her. She wasn't answering and that made me more frustrated. I snatch the papers out of her hands and read them. Basic shit saying I was the dad blah blah.
"I going to die this week, Rolando." She says looking around as if to make sure no one was following her. "They're after me."
"Who?"
"Francisco Guerro. I owe him and I'll never be able to pay off the debt. He's after me, Ronnie. Take care of Janessa."
"Janessa is her name?"
"Yeah." She places a soft kiss on my cheek. "Good bye, Rolando."
She runs down the street and I run after her shouting at her to stop. Why the fuck would she leave Janessa with me? I am a 17 year old guy that dropped out of school to live my life. How am I going to care of a child when I can barely take care of myself? Plus Janessa is not safe in this part of L.A.
"ALEJANDRA! NO COME BACK HERE!"
The crazy Mexican jumps into her car and takes off almost running me over. I watch as she drives away with turning back. I look down at my daughter to see she's already looking at me. She looks almost exactly like me. She has my afro curly hair and hazel eyes. We have very tanned skin with a deep olive undertone. Just another Puerto Rican family around here.
I hold my daughter closer into my chest and hurry back inside. I close the door and walk to my room. I lay the new born on my bed and run my hands in my hair. I feel like shouting and ripping my hair out, but I'm distracted by a small, heart melting giggle.
I smile at Janessa. "You think this is funny?" I tease and surprisingly, she nods and giggles some more. "You know what? Me and you are going to do just fine kiddo."
I make a small makeshift crib with the chairs, blankets, and pillows in my room then lay Janessa inside. I rub her back until she falls asleep and even though it has only been half an hours until I met her, I already love her and would do anything for her.
"I need to get a job." I mutter. "Don't worry, I'll make sure you have everything you need and tomorrow, bright and early, I'm going to go find a job."
