Chapter 1- Coco Puffs. Yummy.
“So, how long is this drive again?!” my sister Layken asked me over the phone. She seems to be more excited about me coming to Huntington, than I am!
I giggled to myself at how childish she sounded before I answered her. “About 2 days, but trust me, I’m NOT looking forward to this drive.” I let out the deep breath I took in. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super excited about spending my summer in Huntington. I haven’t seen my sister, Matt, or my beautiful niece Ryleigh since last Christmas. And it’s June…that’s a long time for me. But I tend to have a bit of road rage, so my drive is going to be verrrry interesting.
“UGH! Tell me again, WHY you insisted on driving instead of flying? If you flew it would take 3 hours, instead of 2 days. And you wouldn’t be wasting your life savings on gas and food!” And with that statement she went from ‘best friend’ Layken to, ‘bitchy, annoyed, big sister’ Layken.
I rolled my eyes before I answered her with the same reply I’ve given her the last 20 times she’s asked me. “Because Lay, 1.) I don’t want to have to borrow either yours , or Matt’s vehicles every time I want to get out of the house, and B.) Because I WANT TO!” I kind of yelled that last part at her. But what can you expect, she’s starting to annoy me. I know she’s excited, but damn, she needs to take a chill pill.
“Fine, whatever, drive your precious truck, just make sure you get here in one piece. Ryleigh has been asking when her La-la was getting here for the past week. If I have to tell her it’s gonna take any longer I think she’ll go crazier than Jimmy” She laughed out.
I busted out laughing, Jimmy is the only one of Matt’s band mates that I’ve met, and let me tell you, that was an experience in itself.
I laughed out, “well, we wouldn’t want that, now would we?” She laughed. I love my sister, she’s my confidant. I could talk to her about anything. “Oh goodness Chy, I gotta go. Ryleigh is making a mess in the kitchen, and Matt and Jimmy are playing Call of Duty, so neither one of them are going to be much help right now” She said snapping me out of my thoughts. “Ah, ok, I gotta finish packing anyway. Tell Pookie that when I get there, he’s gonna have his ass handed to him on COD.”
She busted out laughing, “Oh my lanta, I can’t believe you still call him that!” I smiled to myself, I knew she’d get a kick out of that.
When Layken and Matt first got together, I overheard her call him Pookie over the phone, and ever since, I haven’t let him live it down. That’s what his name is under in my phone, and that’s what I call him when he annoys me, or I just wanna push his buttons. Which is 97.5% of the time.
“ahahahaha, he knows he loves his nickname! “ I said with a smirk on my face. She just busted out laughing again.
We said out ‘Goodbye’s’ and ‘I love you’s’ and ‘See you soon’s’. You know, all that junk you say when you get off the phone with a loved one.
As I hung up my phone, I looked down at my empty suitcases, and ginormous pile of clothes. I let out a heavy sigh, ‘this is gonna be fun trying to pack pretty much EVERYTHING into my suitcases.’ I thought to myself. Procrastination is my weakness. I looked at the pile, then back at the suitcases, then back at the pile, before I was like, ‘fuck it’ and walked away.
I walked downstairs to get some cereal, and saw Daddy sittin’ at the kitchen table. “ ‘mornin’ Daddy!” I said as I walked up to the cabinet to grab the box of cereal. “Good morning pumpkin, did you talk to Layken this morning? How’s my Ryleigh?”
My daddy may be overprotective to the point to where I want to claw my eyes out, but he’s a big softie too. He loves his girls, all of us, with all of his heart, and will do anything he has to, to protect us from all things bad. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve had, “The Talk” when I was only going out with friends. His overprotectiveness is one of the major factors in why Layken moved to Huntington. But it was mostly because she loves Pookie…for some reason. Haha, I crack myself up. Anyway, I was actually surprised when Daddy said it was alright for me to go to Cali for the ENTIRE summer. He wasn’t nearly as protective of Teagan or Layken. I swear it’s because I’m “The Baby”. Pshh, whatever.
I snapped back to reality just in time to answer him. I look back at him and smile. “Well, at the moment, Ry is tormenting her mother by making a mess in the kitchen, but other than that, she’s been normal ol’ Ryleigh. Crazy as shit!” I laughed. He gave me that, ‘Watch your language look’ then went back to reading his newspaper.
“That child is going to be a handful when she gets older.” Is all that he said. I just shook my head while reaching up to grab my box of Coco Puffs. I love these little brown balls of chocolaty goodness! The way they make the milk all chocolaty is just…Yumm!
I grabbed my bowl and head back upstairs to my room. If I gotta start packing I might as well not starve while doing so! Haha.
I look at that big pile of clothes again, and let out an exasperated sigh. “This is going to be a looooong day…” I said to no one in particular. And with that I sat down, finished my cereal, and set to work on packing my stuff up for my , well deserved, vacation to Huntington Beach, California.
