Kai's Account

Kai woke up, wondering where he was. Suddenly, it all came back to him. The tournament. The challenges. Master Chen. And most importantly... The dare from last night. He blushed as he thought about it. How had he worked up the nerve? Maybe he shouldn't have done it. Maybe Twilight would hate him now. He certainly hoped not. Twilight was a great friend, and an even better competitor. He slid out of bed and changed into his tournament suit. Suddenly, Chen's familiar whiny voice echoed over the PA system. "Attention, Elemental Masters! Come down to the Hall for the next challenge!" Kai groaned and stalked out of his room and down to the Hall. He noticed seven treasure chests standing in the middle of the room, in seven different colors: white, black, purple, blue, orange, green, and red. Still staring at the colorful chests, he sat down with his team and waited for Chen to begin. Chen announced that he would eliminate two competitors today, and that the game was a key hunt. "There are eight competitors and only seven chests, so one Elemental Master won't get a chest! The second loser will be chosen once the chests are opened," he cackled enthusiastically. "One chest holds automatic elimination!" Chen went on to explain that he had hid the keys around the island. "You can team up if you want, or just find them on your own." He offered graciously. "Now, GO!" Immediately, Skylor raced off. She must not want to 'burden' herself with a partner. Kai thought disdainfully as he watched Tox and Camille both leave separately. His stomach tightened as Jay and Riptide strode out the door, whispering. Would Twilight be willing to search with him? Had he embarrassed her last night? Suddenly, he felt a tap on his shoulder. "Come on, let's be partners! Hurry, everyone else already went!" Kai felt a surge of relief as Twilight asked. "So you don't hate me for last night?" Twilight smiled that half-smile that only she could do. "Not at all. Now you're stuck being my boyfriend, at least until the tournament ends." Kai blushed slightly. "If you say so," he mumbled, looking up into her eyes. Twilight had these amazing violet eyes that Kai felt he could look into forever... "So are we going or not?" Twilight asked impatiently. Kai shook himself. "Of course. Let's go!" They raced off into the woods, where Kai found a purple key. He handed it to Twilight. "You can have the first one. After all, it matches your suit." And eyes, he thought to himself. "Let's search the beach." Twilight suggested. After a while of searching, Twilight found the white key hidden in the sand. "Sweet! We'll both be safe from at least one of the eliminations!" Twilight exclaimed as they walked back to the forest. But as they neared the Hall, Skylor and Tox appeared from behind the trees. Quickly, they held knives to the ninjas' throats. Skylor laughed. "Well, it's about time, isn't it?" She teased. "Kai, Twilight, you've humiliated me on so many occasions, it's just not fair! Ah, well, at least today you'll get what you deserve." Her words rang ominously, and Kai glanced at Twilight. She seemed to be concentrating hard on something. "How'd you get Tox to help you?" Kai asked, hoping to buy himself and Twilight some time. "Skylor offered to help get me farther into the competition." Tox answered flatly. "Oh, you really believe that?" Twilight muttered incredulously. Tox's nose twitched angrily. "Yes, I do," she replied shortly. "Enough!" Skylor sneered. "Kill them! Oh, I've been waiting for this day to arrive..." Tox paled. "I thought we were only scaring them, not killing them!" Skylor shrugged. "Same difference." Skylor drew her knife, but then, suddenly, two twin bolts of lightning sent her and Tox sprawling. Jay and Riptide burst out of the trees, grinning. Riptide winked at Twilight. Skylor stole the white key and ran away, while Tox lay there, dazed. Kai was upset. Now he didn't have a key! "We'll find another," Twilight promised, but Jay held up a black key. "No need. We have an extra." He handed it to Kai. Once they reached the Hall, Chen announced that Camille had been the contestant without a key. Chen pressed a button, and they heard Camille's distant scream. Chen opened his mouth to tell them to unlock the chests, but Twilight stood up. "I have an accusation to make." She pointed accusingly at Skylor. "This elemental master tried to kill me and Kai." A shocked silence filled the room. Skylor broke the silence with a laugh. "Of course I didn't try to kill you! Tox did! I was trying to stop her!" Although Kai, Riptide and Jay all vouched for Twilight, Chen favored his daughter and Tox fell down the trapdoor. Chen sighed. "How boring," he muttered to himself, before ordering the contestants to return in a half hour for a test.

Author's Note:
Eek! Twilight and Kai almost died! They would have, if it weren't for Jay and Riptide coming to the rescue at just the right moment... Which reminds me... How did they know to come right then?>:) Ah, you'll never know... Until I finish the book, that is! Oh, and I might care to mention that there are only the ninja and the villain left! Who will lose now?
