The plane ride had taken hours. 23 hours to be exact, on a damned plane from Cincinnati airport to Melbourne, Australia. I was sweaty, irritated and jittery from my 8 coffees over the past 19 hours. It wouldn't even had been so bad had I not driven 2 hours to the Cincy airport, just to wait in the terminal for the delay. I never drank so much coffee in one day before. The shakes still hadn't stopped when we started landing.
As I looked out the window onto the unfamiliar territory, I took a gander at my reflection. God I looked awful. I still have yet to figure out why I insist on wearing makeup on a plane when I know I'll just sleep and make my eyeliner turn me into a raccoon. And not a cute raccoon either. I was one of those raccoons that got hit on the highway. Visciously. Several times. The hair that wasn't matted to my temple was a part of the fuzz ball on top of my head. It used to be a sock bun. I then wondered where the sock had gone.
I'd be going back to Chicago in the beginning of January, to finish the later half of my sophomore year. I was in winter break, and this year, decided to go and spend it in Melbourne with my cousin. This would be the first Christmas I wouldn't not spend with my family in Kentucky, but I knew how much Jacob missed being around familiar faces, and thought it would be a great opportunity to travel. I spent the first week with the family in Lexington, seeing my mom and sister and some cousins before leaving the country. Within the past 2 weeks, I have been from Chicago to Lexington, from, Lexington to Boone County to go to the airport, and from Boone County to Melbourne. I smiled at my rootless existence.
My cousin had a similar way of life. Whereas he was born in Louisville and I, Lexington, we weren't able to see each other often, but enough to stay close. This became hard though when he moved to LA for 4 years, trying to make it as an actor. I was a middle schooler when he left. Then he returned to Kentucky, bitter and disillusioned by the gilded glitz of Hollywood. I was never happier, but before I knew it, he was packing his bags to move to the other side of the world. Despite not seeing him for so long, I still thought of him as my older brother, and couldn't stand not seeing him before I went back to college.
There he stood, by baggage claim, for me, holding a sign that read "Little". That had been my nickname since I could remember. The name "Molly" was foreign to him. Jacob was a tall, skinny brunette with bright blue eyes and a dashing smile. His hair was swept over to one side, like the way those hispsters wear it nowadays. It suited him nicely. He was scrolling through his phone inorder to avoid the akward eye contact that usually came with airport standing.
"Hey, you with the face!" Everyone with a face- which was everyone -turned around or looked up towards me, including Jacob. When he looked up from his phone to see my eager face for the first time in the 2 years he's been in Melbourne, and leaving my stuff behind me, I jet propelled into his hug. He twirled me around as if I were a rag doll, popping my spine in several places. I didn't care though. I missed his hugs dearly.
My squeals of excitement rang in the terminal until he sat me down, and stood back, studying how I'd grown in the past years. His jaw dropped while still ,maintaining a smile, and his eyes widened. He always saw me as the baby, but I had done some growing since he left.
I was then, barely 5'7 when he last saw me, with short chocolate colored hair. Now standing in front of him was his 6 foot "little" cousin with long brown layered hair that nearly came down to my waist. Until 11th grade my boobs hadn't come in, and then during my freshman year of college they came out with a bang. I went from a boy chest to a B cup, which was actually not impressive to anyone but myself.
"What happened to you?! You're look so different!"
I gave the biggest smile, and studied how he had changed aswell. There wasn't too much of a difference other than the way he wore his hair. He still smiled with his pearly whites and had the same frantic arm gestures.
