On My Side Now (Mary/Matthew)

Chapter 4

Here's the long chapter my Downton Fans! Enjoy!

Mary's POV
"Do you want to come in a car with us you two, or do you want a car of your own?" Tom and Edith are the only people of the family who are outsiders. What I mean is that they don't always have someone to turn to, Mama had Papa, Granny has Isobel, I have Matthew, and Tom did have Sybil but he doesn't anymore. Papa is telling me to be kinder to my sister so I am even though it would be a bit cramped. They look at each other and Tom says,
"No thank you Mary. I think it would be easier for all of us to take a separate car from you two." I shrug and hear the engine turn on. Matthew holds my hand. "This is your last chance to get out of the car, then once you get on the train there's no turning back. We'll get it now if you've changed your mind, I won't be cross." I shake my head, smiling at my caring husband and take one last look at my home for 5 months.
*6 hours later*
Matthew's POV
After a 5 hour train journey and a 45 minute drive, I finally see the castle. It's a bit bigger than Downton but just as majestic in a different way. Robert and Cora are in the car at the front, then Mother and Cousin Violet behind then, then it's us, then Edith and Tom, then the servants they normally go on the wagonette but seeing as it's a 45 minute ride, they have 2 to an older motor car than the family. There's Carson and Mrs Hughes, then Molesly and Ms O'Brien, then Bates and Anna, then Thomas and Alfred, then Daisy and Mrs Patmore. As we all get out of the car, a young lady I recognise as Rose comes out followed by whom I assume are Cousin Susan and Cousin Shrimpie. The servants get out first and go round the back of the castle, then each chauffeur opens the door and helps us out.

Once we're settled in, we go down to tea in the smaller library. We talk about the weather and hire the journey was, then we hear the Dressing Gong and go upstairs to get changed.

I say thank you to Molesly and knock on the door next to mine,
"You may enter," says the voice belonging to my wife.
"Well that be all, M'lady?" Mary nods and once she closes the door, I ask "My darling?" she looks up at me, "I know you said we'd tell the family tomorrow evening but can't we just tell them now?" She laughs and sighs
"If it ready means that much to you, we can tell them halfway through the dessert."

"Mary and I have an announcement to make!" everyone looks up at me from their desserts, and Mary stands up too, "my beautiful wife, Lady Mary Crawley, is pregnant!"
I can hear lots of "How lovely"s and "That's awfully good"s rumble around the room. I swear I can see a tear form in Carson's eye. Robert then stands up and proposes a toast "To the next Crawley baby, whether a boy or a girl, it will be the newest arrival. Mine and Cora's second grandchild and Isobel's first. If a boy then we will have the 7th Earl of Grantham sorted out! So please raise your glasses to Mary and Matthew the newest parents of the family. To Mary and Matthew!" A low cry of "To Mary and Matthew" can be heard from every direction. When Carson offers me some meat, I heard him mutter, "Well done, Sir."

Robert's POV
I am so happy, I feel my chest will explode, if this baby is a boy then he will be the Earl of Grantham after Matthew. If it's a girl, Sybbie well have a friend to play with.

*5 months later*
(A/N: Sorry for the massive time gap! I didn't have any idea what to put unless I copied the episode exactly!)
Mary's POV
Whilst Anna's helping me get changed, I feel myself contract and I feel a stream of water run down my leg. "OH MY GOD, ANNA GO AND GET MAMA OR ROSE OR EDITH OR ANYONE THAT'S IN THE CASTLE! OH MY...MATTHEW!
Anna's POV
"...OH MY...MATTHEW!" That's the last thing I hear Lady Mary scream. I bump into Mrs Crawley, "Anna! It is Anna isn't it? What ever is the matter?"
"Lady Mary, ma'am. Her waters gave just broken. She sent me top find whoever I can."
"Lead the way then," she starts to jog up the stairs.
Mary's POV
Anna bursts through the door with Isobel.
"I've notified Barrow and he's running to where Matthew us hunting. Right, sit down and Anna, go and fetch either Mrs Hughes our Lady Grantham. Whoever you first bring up here. I don't care what they're doing just bring one of them. I'll help Lady Mary."
Anna's POV
I find Lady Grantham and Mrs Hughes at the same time so Mrs Hughes rings for ambulance and her Ladyship comes with me to Lady Mary's room. I hear the ambulance on the gravel outside but even I know she won't be able to go back to Downton. She'll have to give birth to get first child in an unknown hospital with an unknown doctor.
"I know I can't have Matthew with me but can I have Anna, Mama and Isobel with me?" she breathes. We ask nod because none of us mind and I see it as quite an honour.

I go with Mrs Crawley in a car behind the ambulance because obviously Lady Mary wants to be with her mother.
Mary's POV
Once we get to the hospital, I hear four words spoken by a kindly midwife before the pain kicks in, "Lay down and breath."
