I double knotted my cleats, and stood up to make my way to the field. I strided towards my friends who were all stretching and getting ready for practice. I picked up a soccer ball and tried to do keep-ups, which were my favorite way to loosen up.
1...2...3...4...5--
The ball fell beside me and I tried to pick it up using my feet. No such luck. I only managed to kick it further down the field. I ran my hand through my hair and sighed in frustration. I was too distracted for my own good. My mind kept slipping back to yesterday, and all the events that happened. I probably looked like an idiot to have so much false hope when she answered me, and if that wasn't humiliating enough, I got rejected.
Yay me.
"Hey Beckham, are we switching positions now?"
I looked up and saw my friend, Josh, jogging towards me. I quickly realized that I was standing in the goalies net so I stepped out and said, "Not a chance Stephens, there's no position I despise more."
I smiled at him before running to my spot where everyone was already ready. Like my dad, I played mid-fielder. Cruz did too, but Romeo played a better defense. Not that that mattered too much anyways; Romeo has his eyes set on modeling. The coach blew his sharp whistle and immediately everyone started running and fanning themselves out. Once I saw that my team had well control over the ball, I ran to the other side of the field so that they could pass to me, and I could score. I called for my friend to pass to me, and he kicked the ball sideways, the other team completely unexpecting it. I dribbled the ball a little further down until I ran into someone from the other team. I kicked the ball left, right, left, right attempting to confuse him so that I could slide past, but somehow I lost control over myself and fell face-first into the cold, hard ground. I heard a whoop behind me, and I saw Jayden holding out his hand to offer his help, but at the same time clutching his sides while laughing in hysterics.
Jayden and I met 7 years ago when I was 8. It was my first time playing a game for Arsenal and I was a bloody mess. My heart was beating 100 miles an hour and I almost broke down crying. Jayden, who 10, was from the other team, and he noticed how nervous I was so he came over to help me calm down. I felt a lot better after, so as a thank-you, I invited him over for dinner. That's when he realized who my parents were. He freaked out and started fangirling, so that was our first bonding moment. From then on, we became really tight, and he even transferred teams so we could play together.
"What's up with you? You seem kind of out of it today," Jayden said, while still chucking.
"Nothing," I grumbled. If he knew, I would never hear the end of it.
We set up for another play and this time my mind tried to stay focused. This time the other team stole the first ball, which kept our defense really busy. Normally, I would know exactly what to do in this situation but for the first time, my mine blanked. I started jogging to the other side of the field, but I accidentally stumbled over someones cleats and almost fell. Luckily no one noticed because they were too busy focusing on the ball which was on the other side of the field. Or so I thought. The ball came flying at my face, which knocked me back from the impact. I heard a crack and immediately felt a warm liquid gushing down my nose. I reached to feel the liquid and discovered it was blood flowing down my nose that was now broken. I also felt tears brimming my eyes, which probably meant the ball hit the part of my nose that caused a natural cry reflex. I groaned inwardly as my coach came running to me asking me if I was okay.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little broken nose," I answered, but clearly my answer wasn't very convincing.
"Someone take Beckham to clean this up!" my coach hollered at the players.
