--------------- Chapter One-------------

My name is Katelyn. I live in an ordinary little town in the country of Australia, on the planet Earth. I live in an ordinary house, go to an ordinary school, and have ordinary friends. I spend my weekends by going out with friends when I’m not studying. While I may sound normal, I am actually anything but. Only half of what I said there is true. I do live in an ordinary house in Australia, but only sometimes. Half the time my home is in an extraordinary time and space machine created by an ancient race, the Time Lords. I am technically a time lord as well, since my father is the last true time lord and my mother is a half time lord who gained her time lord genetics through exposure to the time vortex. And also, when I’m on earth I might go out with my friends and study or whatever, but more often you’ll find me travelling through the universe of time. Or maybe you won’t find me, who knows?

Those who know anything about galactic matters are probably wondering how I can exist. You see, the home planet of the Time Lords, Gallifrey, was destroyed in a Time War between my father’s people and a race of evil, genocidal machines called the Daleks. Dad was the only one left; he had to end the War, for the greater good of the universe. Since then he’d been a lonely wanderer, with no one like him in the universe. Then my mother came along, and he and she fell in love and got married. And then, eventually, there was me.

I was brought up with time and space as my backyard, and a powerful machine as my playground. My father’s time machine is infinitely big, apparently, but he gave me a bedroom near to the main console room, where the door is, so that he could keep an eye on me. Since mum has such a complex past, she’s in prison for something she didn’t do (killing my dad, as they got married instead). So she isn’t always around, but dad would drop in and out of Stormcage prison for ease. Dad sometimes had to look after me on his own, which was great because we would play the best of games, and when he tucked me into bed at sleep time he would tell me wondrous stories about his travels; the many monsters he’s fought, the planets he’s visited, the companions he’s had. It was the best childhood ever.

You’re probably wondering now why do I live on earth, if living in space is so good? Well, you see, mum knew how dangerous hanging around dad is. He’s made plenty of enemies over the years and if he was travelling with a young girl like me, especially since I’m his daughter, I could get seriously hurt. So two things were decided. One was that dad could only take me on the safest trips possible. That meant everything had to be planned in advance, regulated carefully and decided upon by both my parents. It also meant that none of my trips were as exciting as they could be. The other thing they decided was that mum and I could live part time in a house on earth, to give me a chance at a normal life and normal friends. I thought this was fair enough, as there weren’t any other kids like me in space and sometimes I wanted a playmate.

So it ended up that way. I had this balanced life, where I acted half the time like I was human, and half the time like a time lord. All of this, though, was about to change.

I waded through the hallway of the school building, trying not to get trampled by stampeding students trying to escape school so they could enjoy their afternoon. Finally reaching my locker I carefully unlocked it and then wrenched the small door open. Glancing cautiously around, I slid my advanced phone out of the enclosed space alongside my school books. Then I slammed the door shut, and threw my books into my backpack before slinging it over my shoulder and hurrying off. I was just as desperate to leave school as everybody else.

A short walk and then I had arrived at my small home. Chucking my school bag on the floor, I yelled a greeting into the silent house.

Mum wasn’t home but my cat was. I laughed with delight as he slunk into the room, looking for me. He’d hardly had time to look at me before I swept him up into my arms and gave a small cat sound that in fact translated in cat language as ‘how was your day?’
