Liam tried to open his eyes. They were heavy, and the light hurt. He squinted, letting his eyes adjust. After a few seconds, he realised he was laying in a hospital bed. Tubes were coming out of his arms. He slowly turned his head to the side and noticed Niall slumped in the chair next to him. He had his head in his hands, sleeping.

"Niall?" His throat still hurt, but he could speak. Niall lifted his head, and smiled at Liam with sleepy eyes.

"Morning mate." he said.

"Did you sleep there all night?" He nodded slowly.

"Thank you." Liam smiled, but then it dropped when a thought popped into his head.

"Where's Louisa?" I asked. Niall sat up, but didn't answer Liam.

"Niall, where is Louisa?" He said a little more sternly. He pursed his lips.

"She... she's in a coma Liam." Liam caught his breathe. A... a coma? This wasn't happening. He'd caused this, this wasn't okay. He'd put his wife into a coma. Liam had nearly killed his wife. It's all his fault, this is all his fault. All these terrible thoughts rushed round Liam's head when it hit him like a tonne of bricks, and he just broke down into tears.

"Liam..." Niall stood up and wrapped his arms round his shoulders, giving him a friendly, reassuring hug. Liam just sat hunched up in his hospital bed, violently sobbing. After a few moments, his breathing slowed and only a few tears were running down his cheeks.

"You bashed your head, but there's nothing wrong, just a fairly big cut. They stitched it up, but you'll be okay. They thought you'd broken your neck but everything seemed okay after an x-ray. Louisa... Louisa suffered badly. She bashed her head on the dashboard and for some reason the airbag didn't go off. She lost a lot of blood, and they had to operate on her last night. They put her in a coma to make sure she recovered, but now... now we just have to wait." He just sat in shock.

"Everything's all my fault Niall..."

"No, Liam don't say tha-"

"Niall, don't. I was shouting at Louisa. I thought I knew where we were going, I thought I was right, and she was trying to be better than me. I got angry at her for no reason, and I lost concentration. I crashed the car, and have nearly killed my wife... probably have killed my wife. It's all my fault..."

Niall sat back down and rested his chin in his heads, thinking. Just then a nurse popped in.

"Ah, I see you're awake Mr Payne." she said with a smile. Liam sat back in his bed and looked to her, wating for her to continue.

"Has Mr Horan told you what's happened?" He glanced across to Niall, now lost in thought, turned back to the nurse and nodded.

"Okay then, well Louisa is allowed visitors, but no more than two at a time. No one knows how long this coma will last or... or whether she'll come out of it. We're sorry Mr Payne, but she suffered badly, and the only way to save her was to put her in a coma. We've done all we can, we just have to let her body do the rest now." Liam sighed loudly and put his head between his hands, not being able to take it all in.

"I'll leave you for now, if you need anything, press the buzzer." The nurse left the room.

Liam could never look at himself again. He qwas a horrible person, and selfish. I'd put my wife's life at risk over stupid directions. Why had I been so arrogant? I was such a dick.

"Lots of people have come to visit..." Niall said. Liam just nodded.

"Harry, Louis, Zayn, your mum and dad, and lots of fans." Fans. Always there for them. That made Liam smile. Through the toughest times in his life, at least he knew he could count on them mostly.

"What the fans been up to?" He asked, trying to take his mind off Louisa.

"Ah, you know, trying to wing their way in saying they know you, leaving flowers and cards at reception, singing outside the hospital. Nothing drastict... yet, just all pretty calm, and concered for you and Louisa."

"If you don't mind, I'm going to go to your house and get you some stuff. We've only got your suit from last night, and I presume you want something comfier." Liam nodded and replied

"Yeah, thanks Ni, that would be great." With that Niall left, leaving Liam to think over everything.
