"Hurry up. You need to leave." There was a knock on the door.

Frankie rolled her eyes. "One second," she called through the closed door.

There was a pause. "What are you doing in there anyway?" Her mom asked.

"Eyeliner," Frankie said matter-of-factly.

She could basically hear her mom brighten at her words. "Oh. Take your time then." Her footsteps faded away.

Frankie put down the pencil and examined her work. Eyeliner was the only makeup she would wear, and even then she rarely wore it. Eyeliner was gender-neutral anyway, and sometimes she would want to look at lest halfway decent.

She ran her fingers through her chin-length hair, trying to comb it flat. She hated long hair.

She stepped out of the bathroom and tried to slip out the front door without being seen, but it was no use. It was like her mom had twelve pairs of eyes.

"Did you try the dress on?" She asked. "For the banquet."

Frankie opened the door. "Yeah." She walked out.

"Come straight home after school," her mother said.

"I can't." Frankie turned to face her. "I'm meeting up with Brendon and Ryan."

"Ryan?" Her mother always had a soft spot for the boy. "Where are you two going?"

"Probably his house," Frankie said. "And it's the three of us, Mom. Brendon isn't a chair. In case you forgot, he and Ryan are together. As in they're dating."

Her mother's face went white at the mention of two boys dating. With a huff of annoyance, Frankie turned on her heel and walked to school.

Her bad mood lasted throughout the day, or until Gerard approached her after school was over. "Hi."

"Hey." Frankie shut her locker. "Um–"

"Do you–" Gerard said at the same time. They both grinned.

"You go first," Frankie said.

"No, you go," Gerard insisted. "Ladies first, after all."

Frankie gritted her teeth, pressing her lips into a line. "I was wondering if you wanted to hang out with two of my friends tonight. I've told them about you and they wanted to meet you."

Gerard's stomach flipped. Frankie had talked about him? "Yeah, that'd be fun."

"Cool." The two started to walk out of the building.

Gerard tilted his head to the side. "Are you wearing eyeliner?"

Frankie looked at the ground, a small smile coating her lips. "Yeah."

"It looks good," he complimented. "Not being socially acceptable for boys to wear eyeliner makes me want to punch a wall."

Frankie spun around to face him. "I know, right?" She nearly yelled. "Boys look amazing in makeup."

Gerard nodded in agreement. "So are we meeting your friends somewhere or..."

"Nah, we're just going to Ryan's house. Brendon'll be there, too. And they're um, together, so if it's strange for you–"
