Chapter 7

You sat on your bed brushing your hair, when Christine sat down beside you with a smile on her face. For the past two weeks she was happy, and even though you were a little worried about Erik, Christine made you feel better.

"Hey, (y/n), remember when you told me how much you love masquerade balls?" Christine asked you, giving you a little nudge.

"Which time are you talking about?" You laughed. You had always loved Masquerade balls, and all the costumes that people wore.

"My point is," Christine said laughing "is that this year I get an invitation to the New Year's Masquerade Ball, and so I get to bring a friend along." Your eyes lit up; you knew where this was heading. "Raoul is already invited, and Meg is going with her mother, so would you like to go?" You hugged her tightly.

"Oh, yes, I would love to. Thank you!" You squealed happily. Christine hugged you back then got up from your bed.

"Goodnight." Christine yawned, crawling into her own bed.

"Goodnight, Christine." You replied, pretending you were tired. In reality, though, you were as excited as possible. Not only did you now know that you will be going to the Masquerade ball, but tonight was the night you were going to finally see Erik again! You lay in your bed quietly, pretending to sleep, waiting for the others to fall into deep sleep. You waited and waited until the moon was high up in the sky. Then you snuck out of the room and ran quietly to the secret tunnels.

"Erik," You said, walking into his lair.

"Ah, good evening, (y/n)," Erik replied. He seemed far happier than when last you saw him. Happily, you hummed as you walked up to Erik at the organ. "You seem in a happy mood, may I ask why?"

"Why yes you may. I'm going to the New Year's Masquerade ball!" you announced happily. A smug grin slowly appeared on Erik's masked face.

"Christine will also be there... am I right?"

"Yes... because of her I am able to go..."

"Wonderful. There is something I will need you to do that night at the Masquerade"

You walked into the crowded party that was the Masquerade Ball. All around you people laughed and talked. They sang and danced, and had a merry time. For the most part, everyone wore bright, flashy clothing. You, on the other hand, wore a simple outfit that took the design of a robin. (see the picture on top) Adjusting your feathery mask, you wandered about the Ball. You felt like you belonged with the people of the high society, yet, you knew you never wanted to live that kind of life. All the snobbish people, paying attention to only their little groups while talking. Even with that, though, you loved the Ball. You danced to the music by yourself and sipped at the bubbly drinks they served, that was, you did until you saw Christine and Raoul walk onto the dance floor.

You had to go then. You had to do what Erik had asked of you. Turing to walk away, you ran straight into someone.

"Pardon me, monsieur." You apologized looking at the young man. He seemed so familiar; his longish dark brown hair, his emerald green eyes, it felt like you knew him somehow.

"Forgive me, it was my fault." The young man replied. Even his voice seemed familiar to you. Who was he? It didn't matter. You had to go.

"Excuse me, but I must leave." You told him.

"You cannot stay for one dance?"

"No, monsieur, I cannot," you told him, "Now, If you would please excuse me..." He gently grabbed you arm.

"May I at least have your name?" You paused for a moment; it would be impolite to answer him.

"(y/n)" you told him. "Now please excuse me, I must go now." You pulled your arm away from him and walked into the crowd, hoping the man would not follow you. It wasn't like you wanted to be rude to the kind gentlemen, but you needed to go. Erik was counting on you.

Quickly and quietly, you weaved through the crowds and walked into an empty room. You walked over to the wall and knocked on it. The wall slid open, and out walked Erik. He was cloaked in reed and Black, and his mask looked like a skull. At his side was a rapier.

"Is Christine in the main hall?" he asked.

"Yes, she is." You answered. He placed his gloved hand on your shoulder.

"Good. Thank you." You looked down. "You may go back to the party now. I will follow soon." He lifted your chin up to look at him. "We don't want anyone to think you've been helping me" He smiled at you and you left. As you walked back to the party, you realized you didn't really wish to be there anymore. The glamour of the party was gone; all you wanted to do was leave.

Yet, no matter how badly you felt like leaving, you stayed at that party and waited. As Erik appeared in the party and announced his new opera, Don Juan Triumphant, you stood in the back, your feelings eating away at you. He stood in front of Christine, telling her she was to play the lead role, and that tore at your heart. In his eyes you saw longing and love, feeling you wished Erik would show towards you. You watched as he angrily grabbed at something around Christine's neck, a necklace most likely, and tore it off of her. In a bright flash of flame and color, he was gone. That was his plan; give his opera to the managers, set down a few rules, and leave.

You sighed. To think you always wanted to attend the masquerade ball. Now, all you wanted to do was leave. You sighed again. Why were emotions so confusing? You looked up, seeing Christine make her way towards you.

"Are you alright?" You asked your friend as she took your hands into hers.

"Yes, I'm fine," she assured you, attempting a fake smile. "...though the Phantom did take my engagement ring..."

"Engagement ring? Christine... you're engaged?"

"Yes," she nodded, "I'm engaged to Raoul." She looked down. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner... I... wanted to keep it a secret."

"No, it's alright." You assured her. "You had no reason to tell me." Christine looked at you and smiled, but slowly her smile fell.

"...Are you feeling alright?" she asked you. "...you don't look quite like your usual happy self..."

"Yeah, I'm fine!" You smiled at her, hoping she didn't notice how fake it was. "...I'm just tired... I think I may head back to the dormitories..."

"Oh... okay... goodnight then..."

"Goodnight, Christine..." You gave her one last hug and went to the door, leaving the glamorous party behind.
