Chapter 1: Entrance Examination
The St. Louis Preparatory School for College is a school that offers two school years for fresh high school graduates (guys) who think that they need an extra “preparation” for college. It’s a good school with dormitories, the latest technology and one of the best cuisines in the history of schools. In short, it is a school where only rich kids go to spend the extra money their families have.
Today is the entrance examinations. I wanted for this moment the whole summer. I studied for this ever since my third year in high school.
“Joshua,” the proctor arranged his glasses and cleared his throat, “Oaks.”
I winced. At the sound of my last name, the other examinees turned their heads my way. They watched me as I sit at my designated chair.
“Michael Oliver.”
“Yes?” a girlish voice said. Huh? St. Louis is only for guys. How can a girl be present in the examinations?
“Sit there.”
The skinny guy—Michael Oliver—sat on the chair next to mine. He looks like a girl at first glance but he’s not… I assure you. Judging by his looks—
He caught me staring at him. Instead of being intimidated of something, he smiled at me. I was staring daggers at him and he’s returning a smile of candies? Woah. This guy’s unbelievable.
After about three hours, the proctor announced the break. When the thirty minutes started, the other examinees began to compare their answers and started scanning their reviewers. Including Mr. Unbelievable, Michael Oliver.
“Excuse me, could you complete the square of this equation? I end up doing something wrong every time I answer this. Could you please help me?” Michael said to me.
I looked at his notebook. What a piece of joke. He had the nerve to take the entrance exam but he can’t even solve this kind of easy equation? He really is unbelievable.
“No,” I said simply.
“Huh? But they said you could—“
“And you know what?” I interrupted him, “What you’re doing right now is considered cheating. Besides, how can you not solve that kind of easy equation?”
“Listen dude,” a guy said, “the proctor said that we can’t compare answers and we can’t take our reviewers out if we’re taking the test. C’mon dude. We’re having the break.”
I looked at the guy intently. “Yes, we are having our break. But that doesn’t mean that we’re done with the examinations. We are not answering right now but technically, we’re still taking the exams. So you are considered cheating right now.”
Everybody fell silent. And then Michael spoke up:
“Yes. Let’s say we’re cheating right now. But Mr. Oaks, pride is something that will kill you. Pride is one of the seven deadliest sins whereas cheating isn’t. Good luck for the next test.”
For the fourth(?) time, that guy is unbelievable.
_-_-_-_-_
What the hell is this? Solving quadratic equations by completing the square? And we have to write the solutions. Argh. I thought this is easy. Screw myself.
I glanced at Michael. He’s grinning like a maniac. I hate my life. This means I could not make this test perfect. I gulped. I slowly looked at Michael’s paper.
Josh, this is wrong. You can’t just look at other person’s paper. You can’t cheat. You still have your self-respect. You mustn’t be like them.
Michael cleared his throat. My eyes met his. He caught me again.
“Who’s cheating now?” he said, smirking.
Ugh. The nerve.
