Chapter 2. The Rites

I passed the entrance exams. I can’t believe that I’m entering the school grounds now with my things. It’s close to dinner time now.

“Sir. I’ll go with you to your dormitory room. Also, if you need me, just press 8 on your speed dial.”

“No, Dash. I told you. I’ll handle myself without your help. Just tell father that he mustn’t be worried about me and that I’ll do my best in this school. I’ll follow his words and I will follow his orders. I will be on top of my class and I will spend my money wisely—“

“Is your father dying already?” Dash said suddenly.

“Pardon?” I said.

“You’re sort of telling me the things that you’re going to do and everything. No offense, Sir. You’re a bit dramatic. You’ll just be here for two years. No need to tell me the things you have to tell before your father dies. It’s too early for that.”

“Whatever.”

“First years! Over here!” somebody yelled. That’s probably a senior (or a second year in our case) who will be guiding us to the dormitories.

“My car keys,” I said urgently. Dash looked at me blankly.

“Give me my car keys.” Dash looked at my hand hesitantly.

“How will I go back without a car?” he asked.

“Take a bus or the subway. I really have to go,” I said as I grabbed my car keys in his hands. I ran. The only thing with me is my duffel bag. Inside are my personal things and money just in case.

“Follow me,” the senior said, ”Oh! And a single line only.”

“I thought we’re off to the dormitories. Where are we going?” a guy said.

“To the field,” the senior said.

A chorus of whats and huhs were heard. Of course I was just quiet.

“Nobody told you?” the senior said playfully. “You’re going to have the initiation rites.”

Again, a chorus of expressions was heard. Some swore and some complained. This time, I heard my helpless voice with theirs.

-_-_-_-_-_

“Welcome to the St. Louis. You are here for the initiation rites,” the student body president said.

Time check: 9:00 pm. We ate dinner already. Thank God.

“The yearly initiation rite is called the Nakedness. What is that, you may ask. Everyone will strip his clothes off. While running the track oval, he would shout ‘I will be a St. Louisian soon but right now I’m running proudly without any clothes.’ You would shout that over and over again with swear words in between. Example—“ he cleared his throat.

Oh no. Please don’t continue. I don’t like hearing bad words over and over again.

I asdf will asdf be asdf a asdf St. asdf Louisian asdf soon asdf but asdf right asdf now asdf I’m asdf running asdf proudly asdf without asdf any asdf clothes!” the student body president said boldly and I mean BOLDLY.
