The Queen was woken up from her bad dream with a knock on her bedroom door. It opened revealing Megan and two other housekeeping staff members. "Your majesty, if you don't get up now you won't be able to freshen up, and have breakfast before your meeting." To her dismay, she wasn't looking forward to the meeting though the subject of the gathering was one she was particularly fond of. With a small thank you, once she washed her face and brushed her teeth her maids helped her prepare for the day.
Megan picked out a gown to wear for the meeting. When Elsa changed into it, her reflection glowed, the dress offered her confidence-something she has been secretly lacking for a while now. Overall she appeared even more powerful, so much she almost wanted to change out of the gown, but she decided she owed it to herself to feel this way every once in a while. She pulled her hair into a high, and tight ponytail so nothing fell in her face. After slipping on a pair of silver heels her maids walked her down the hall to the balcony where she wanted to have her morning meal alone. The three maids curtsied as they were dismissed. Elsa ate in silence while paying attention to the view displayed in front of her.
Everything was covered with a thin layer of snow. It was December, another Christmas alone for the queen. She sighed and began picking at her food instead of eating it. She fought a frown and focused on the meeting she was about to attend. It was for the Annual Christmas Ball, something she created the year she restored her relationship with her younger sister Anna. For years it was Anna's favorite event, she and the entire kingdom looked forward to it. It brought a type of joy and magic to the kingdom that couldn't be created by the queen. That's why Elsa liked it as well, the children laughed a little longer, the music played a little louder, people smiled a little brighter, she didn't feel as alone.
Although winter was the coldest in Arendale, Elsa never felt warmer than when in Christmas. She tried to think of ways to make this year's ball better than last, which was a task she demanded to do each time.
This year she did not feel as excited. When her mind was not blank, all she could think about was last night. Her fingers itched to have that book in her hands right now, but it was not the time. She sighed again standing then walked away from her unfinished meal. Megan quickly picked up her things and cleaned her spot. The Queen took her time walking to the Great Hall, the meeting was to commence for a couple of minutes so she took the long way there.
Anna came to her mind again, so she stopped walking. She remembered how happy and excited she was during his time of year. Why was it that the longer you thought of something the difficult it became to remember it? When Elsa thought of her sister, she thought about her laugh; how loud it was, and how it made others smile. She couldn't remember the way Anna's eyes closed shut, and how her head fell back as she laughed. She knew her sisters laugh was beautiful, but she couldn't remember why. It was frightening to lose a memory especially if the memory was all that was left of a person.
"Your majesty." The Queen jumped a little in her spot and turned to the voice. It was Jordan, her secretary. He told her that the meeting was ready to begin and was waiting for her to make an appearance.
For the Queen, the next two hours consisted of event planning, things like: what color flowers, what food, who will be invited, what color scheme, what music, and most importantly how can the Christmas Ball be better than last year. It never resembled much work, but it requires so much energy. Elsa was the last to leave the room. She kept looking at old photographs of the same event, and there were so many. The pictures never failed to capture the joy in the guests. Everyone always wore the warmest of smiles. The Queen held a photograph of Anna and herself. It was very old, probably taken when the event was still new to Arendale. Anna was young, but Elsa still looked the same. She truly has not aged, it had been so long since then. It was odd for her, sometimes she forgets this. Recently she had not been able to, though. Despite the things she is required to do daily, she was forced to remember something as torturing as immorality. However, she was not going to let her hatred for that stop her from hosting a wonderful Christmas Ball again this year. It was dedicated to her sister. To the person who never failed to reassure Elsa that she was never alone even if no one else is around.
