The first half of the day passed uneventfully, with teachers handing out the usual get-to-know-you essays and syllabi. At lunch, I dragged my feet to the cafeteria. It was the same routine every year; find someone you know, however distantly, and sit with them. Mixing up the grades was pretty much the most ridiculous thing the school has done, not counting charging $50 for a parking pass.

I scanned the huge tiled room looking for someone I both knew and could stand sitting with. I saw the skater girls sitting there near the middle, so I sighed and walked towards their table. They were nice enough, I guess, but I prefer Delias to DC. I was feeling sorry for myself about the boredom fated for me for the rest of the year, when I saw Tara sitting on the other side of the room. I brightened almost immediately, she was really friendly when I had talked to her that morning. I excused myself from the table and walked over to where she was sitting. I asked her how her day went so far. I was a little confused when she told me to go hang out with my friends, but then I realized she meant the girls I was sitting with.

"Oh, them!" I laughed a little. "No, they are definitely not my friends!"

When the 3:45 bell finally rang, I hung around in my last period Trig class for a while. Waiting for the crowds of people to dissipate. When I finally said goodbye to Ms. Hansen, it was around four. I walked towards the box slowly, just in case. I doubted there would be any in there, but you never know. That's why I check everyday.

Looking around to make sure I was alone, I slipped my key into the lock and peered inside. Nothing, like I expected. I closed the box quietly and locked it back, looking around one last time to make sure no one had witnessed me.
