Summer was flying past us. Before we knew it, it was the end of June and we began preparing the lake house for our Fourth of July cook out. We had one every year. Our parents drove down the night before the party and returned home the morning after the party. I was a little nervous about my parents coming down here. I was only a couple weeks so I wasn't showing, but I became nauseous easily and my mom would know that I'm pregnant instantly if I got sick from the sight of raw meat.
Today was July third. Tomorrow, our parents would be here and I would have to hide from mine that I'm pregnant. Jake stayed calm, like he has since we found out I was carrying his baby. He didn't know that my parents would overreact, like they usually did when it came to me and boys. It would be like World War three broke out.
I was chopping up lettuce, tomato, onion, and banana peppers for grilled chicken salad. My parents loved grilled chicken salad and I would try to soften the blow as much as possible by preparing their favorite foods.
I wasn't feeling to hot today. It was still early so I was still suffering from morning sickness and I was nervous about the next couple of days, which made me even sicker. Jake noticed this as soon as he walked into the kitchen.
"Baby, why don't you take a break?" he suggested, wrapping his arms around my waist.
I leaned back against him and set the knife down. He pressed his lips to my shoulder and I closed my eyes. His hands slid over my stomach and stopped there for a moment. After a minute his hands moved to my hips.
I turned in his arms and his hands stayed where they were, which meant they were now on my butt. He squeezed me gently and pulled me against him. I looked up and he kissed me. This kiss was unlike the other one's we've shared recently. This one was full of passion and need, and not so gentle.
He pulled away suddenly and lifted his hands from my butt. He looked at them and froze. I looked down at his hand to see what was on it. Blood was smeared on his hand.
"What did you do?" I gasped, reaching for a dish rag.
"Em..." he trailed off.
I found a dish rag and wrapped it around his hand. "What?"
"That's...That's not my blood."
I looked up at him, confused. "Then who's is it?"
"Yours."
A few hours later...
i was lying on the cold metal table with Jake by my side waiting for the doctor to come back in. We were both freaking out about my bleeding. Was I no longer pregnant? Did I lose the baby? Did my negative thoughts and my indecisiveness kill the baby? Was that even possible?
I could tell Jake was thinking the same thing I was. He had tears in his eyes and he was squeezing my hand tightly. The bleeding stopped, but we didn't know if the baby was okay or not.
"Can I ask you something, Em?" Jake said softly.
I looked over at him. "Of course, baby."
He took in a deep breath. "You want this baby, right?"
"Of course I do, Jake." I assured him. "Why would you think I wouldn't want the baby?"
"You don't seem as happy about that baby as I though you would."
I squeezed his hand. "I'm still in shock, Jake. I didn't expect this to happen."
"I know that. I didn't expect it to happen either, but at the same time I didn't do anything to prevent it either."
"I really hope we don't lose the baby." I whispered.
He wrapped both arms around me and hugged me against him. "I know, baby. So do I."
Just then, the door opened and an unfamiliar doctor walked into the room. She smiled widely.
"Hello." she said, her voice huskier than I though it would be for someone so tiny. "I'm Dr. Kirsch."
"Is our baby okay?" Jake asked her.
'Let's fine out." she smiled again and sat in the stool beside the table. She turned on a few monitors and asked me to pull up my hospital gown. I did and she pulled a paper blanket over my exposed legs. She squirted a cold gel on my stomach and pressed the remote looking thing to my stomach. As she moved it around, she focused on the monitor that was turned away from us.
"Ah." she said after I minuted.
"What is it?" Jake demanded. "Is everything okay?"
She looked at us with a smile on her face. "Your babies are fine."
Babies?
"Babies?" Jake asked out loud.
She nodded, moving the thing around my stomach a little more. "You're carrying twins."
"So, everything is okay?" I asked.
"They are perfectly healthy." she assured me.
I sighed with relief.
"Than why was she bleeding?" Jake asked.
"That's common with young mothers. Usually, if you would lose the baby, there would be a lot more blood than there was with you. But the bleeding stopped and your babies are perfectly healthy. I would suggest taking it easy. No lifting things that exceed twenty pounds."
Jake pressed his forehead to my cheek. "Thank you." he whispered.
"Would you like a video to show your families?" she asked.
"Of course." I told her.
She handed me a soft cloth. "Clean yourself up while I make this video."
I gently wiped the gel from my stomach and set the cloth In a bin with other dirty cloths. I look over at Jake and he wrapped his arms around me. I hugged him tightly.
"I love you." I whispered in his ear.
"I love you, too. Always." he whispered back.
He pulled away and kissed me. Like earlier, this kiss seemed to spark something in me. It made me want more. So much more.
"Here you go." Dr. Kirsch said.
We broke apart and Jake took the acrylic case holding a video of our babies. I changed back into my clothes and thanked her before walking out of the small room. Jake wrapped his arms around me and held me against him as we walked.
Everyone was waiting anxiously for us when we got back. I had to tell Minnie like ten times that everything was fine. Jake and I agreed not to tell anyone about the twins until the baby shower.
"Why don't you go lie down?" Jake suggested, wrapping his arms around my stomach from behind me. We were standing with everyone in the kitchen.
I leaned back against him. "I'm okay."
"Are you hungry?"
"Yeah, a little."
"We can take care of that."
I spun around and gasped. My parents were early. My mom was smiling widely, but my dad's eyes were focused on my stomach, were both of Jake's hands were resting. He knew. He looked up at my face and his nostrils flared.
Oh, boy.
