Kayla
I sighed as I took out the dishes from the dishwasher.
"Scrub scrub!" My grandmother used to say.
I rested my hand on the wooden desk. It was unfair that every lady was invited to the ball. I frowned and continued to scrub some nasty dishes.
The thrill of holding handa of the most charming prince would be a dream come through. Alas, I come from a village, and even worse, I was as ragged as as a rag rat.
Now is the time for my fairy grandmother to pop up.
One

Three!

Believing in fairytales is the problem. They aren't real.
"Kayla!?"
I turned to see Nicholas grinning like crazy while holding loaves of bread. He was my mother's friend's son.
His curly blonde hair and his bright green eyes made him look younger, the fact that he is one year older than me.
"I was going to bring these to you, but realized you must have gone to the ball, but I went anyways," he continued as he set the basket of loaves on the table.
"Well I didn't go," I said in a hurt voice.
"Why not?"
"Mother just said no?"
"Why?"
"She doesn't want me to marry a prince, she wants me to marry--,"
You, I was planning to say, but I kept it in.
His face dimmed and his eyes showed off a glint of anger and hate.
"Marry who?" He asked.
"Prince Calum, or um prince Derek? Or maybe Prince Harry!" He pressed.
I gulped when he started to rumble about having wonderful and smart kids with one of those princes.
But then I froze when he said this, "You're beautiful, if they don't want to take your hand in marriage then they have to talk to me,"
My face became bright red and I started to stutter. "Wait--did you?"
Ignoring my question he continued, "I prefer Prince Derek though. Smart and hardworking, sounds like someone I know!" He said, eyeing me and wriggling his eyebrows.
"With all these talk, you sound just like grammie!" I joked while slapping him in the arm.
"Look, Kayla, I'll be eighteen next month, I just--,"
"I just want to tell you to be ready,"
I cocked an eyebrow and grinned.
"I'll be busier," he stated.
I started to snicker, so I punched him in the arm. "I'm alright," I giggled. "I'm old enough now, I wasn't the same girl who you rescued from being hit years ago,".
Nicholas ruffled through his hair and nodded.
"Goodbye," he said while holding on the door frame.
"Remember, the three princes are going to pick their princess tomorrow! Be ready!" He added.
He left.
I started to feel butterflies in my stomach, but I knew it wasn't for those Princes. It was for Nicholas
