Precious memories

I can remember when I first saw you,
Looking through the bars of the cage at me,
Your piercing but kind eyes peering into my soul.
I knew immediately,
That you were the one,
I wanted to take home.
I put you in the front room,
Fed you when you were hungry,
And filled your water when you were thirsty.
In exchange,
I got a lifetime of memories,
From you performing in your cage.
Swinging from bar to bar,
Hanging upside down,
Even getting your feathers in a ruffle made me laugh.
When I let you out,
You'd swoop across the room,
Just like an eagle who couldn't be contained.
You were so special to me,
You were a member of the family,
Who I held so dearly in my heart.
Never would I have thought,
That losing you would be,
The rollercoaster of unbearable pain that it was.
My heart stopped,
The minute I was told,
As part of it died with you.
The grieving process was long,
As I only wanted you home,
To hear your loud chirping again.
I just hope that you made it,
Across the rainbow bridge,
Safely and pain free.
Even though,
You're better off up there,
I wish you were still here with me.
