A/N - Welcome to my very first Kuroshitsuji fanfic. My name is Emily, and you have all rights to kill me, scream at me, or cry in my arms because this is gonna be one hell of a fanfic. Call me Author-chan, Emily, Em, however you prefer. I'm assuming you know all the terms used for an x Reader, if not then please go somewhere else and come back to this story, as I do not wish to waste time and effort. Also, screw plot, I'm doing my own thing.

|Prologue|

Late November, 1889
[Your PoV]

It's been a year since I've had the pleasure of working under Earl Ciel Phantomhive as his right-hand maid, and not once have I seen him crack a smile. To be precise, I haven't seen the corners of his mouth turn up for anything or anyone, except for a smirk--and even those were rare! I hadn't noticed this, until the late November of 1889, as Sebastian and Young Master were discussing the Young Master's upcoming birthday on the fourteenth of December.

Young Master Ciel had called for his afternoon tea, as he was discussing plans with Sebastian (whom had taught me his ways of making tea).

I wheeled the cart over to his study, but stopped.

Sebastian's silk-like voice could be heard.

"Young Master, why not lighten up a bit?" his voice seemed playful, but even the most ignorant of fools could tell he was serious. "Lady Elizabeth will soon come for your birthday, the least you could do is show her a smile."

"I don't need to." Young Master's cold voice replied. "Besides... I've forgotten how."

The words hit me, hard. Is that why? Memories flooded back, like a tsunami of the past rushing over the sands of my mind. I remembered the night I had to live through, the night that taught me how cruel life could be.

I was a spoiled brat, the spotlight of attention in my family. I got everything I wanted, and I was happy. I had been modest, polite and kind... almost the perfect girl, now that I think about it. But all good things must come to an end. That night, blood was shed. Everyone left. I was alone, alone in my little world of darkness.

"Why the long face?" Sebastian had cooed.

"I'm alone." I had answered.

"Well, if I do recall, you've got quite the obedience skill." He had said.

That night, he recruited me as a maid. I met Baldroy, Mey-Rin, and Finny, and of course, the Earl Ciel Phantomhive, proud owner of the Funtom Company.

Soon after, I became Lord Ciel's right-hand maid and number one servant--after Sebastian, of course. I still did chores with Finny, Mey-Rin and Bard, but I was a bit more responsible; I had the task of keeping them in check.

The conversation finished. I walked into the study, pretending I hadn't heard anything; which I didn't, for the most part.

"Young Master, your tea." I called softly. "Sebastian, do serve this for me. I have errands to attend with the other servants."

"Of course, (Y/N)."

And I walked off. Before long, the Earl's voice called out sternly, "(Y/N)."

I walked back in. "Yes, Young Master?"

When I came in, Ciel faced his butler. "Sebastian, a moment alone, please."

The demon nodded; and left.

There was silence. Before I could speak, the Young Master started to talk.

"(Y/N)," he started.

"Yes?"

"I understand before you were brought here that you were..." he hesitated. "A happy girl."

He's trampling on thin ice. I replied nonetheless, "Yes, my lord. What-"

"Teach me how to be happy." He blurted.

What? What'd he just say? Have I heard him correctly? "E-excuse me, my lord?"

He repeated, "Teach me how to be happy."

"Pardon me for asking, but... what got you into this? Why are you doing this?"

"For Lizzie's sake." The reply seemed reluctant, almost like a lie. But it was deemed so-called truth.

Of course, I thought. Why did I think I had a chance in the first place? "Why me, of all people?"

He didn't reply to that. There was more silence.

This time, I spoke first. "When shall we start?"

"Tomorrow, 2:15 pm sharp, in my study."

"Where shall we start?"

He stayed quiet for a bit.

"It seems I've forgotten how to smile."

Bingo.

"Then it seems I'll have to teach you."
