Dizzy smiled and opened her mouth to say something, but I gave her a disapproving look and she fell silent. I knew she, as well as Jessie, was about to say something really bitchy and horrid. I thought better and as Charlotte ran up the stairs to our dorm, I followed her and talked to her. She said that she'd liked him as soon as she'd entered the door to East Side. I agreed.
"Its the same with me and James."
"Not at all. It's not, no way - you and James both loved each other. I love Ben and he hates me. I know he does."
"I'm sure he doesn't hate you. That's impossible."
"It's not - I've seen the way he looks at me, it's unbearable. I don't think he'll ever like me. He'd probably go out with Daisy Underling over me."
Daisy Underling was a really ugly 3rd year, the same as Ben. I decided not to mention Dizzy and I saw both of them pressed against each other against the wall in the hallway, sucking the faces off of each other yesterday, but Dizzy suddenly remembered this fact and ran up and did it for me. Charlotte's bottom lip trembled.
She collapsed on her bed sobbing and both of us sighed and retreated. We decided to lock the door behind us for Charlotte's privacy.
After an hour of nervous waiting, with all of us glaring at Ben and Daisy tounging on a sofa next to us, Jessie and I decided to go and see how Charlotte was. Dizzy promised us she'd stay put in the common room and probably wrench Ben and Daisy apart if they got any more excited, which was fine with us.
Jessie's dainty flip flops smacked against the stone steps as we climbed the staircase. We unlocked the door with my key and stepped inside.
"Chaz?" Jessie called.
But there was no Chaz there. I ran to the open window and looked out. As my robes billowed around me in the wind coming through the window, I caught a glimpse of Charlotte by the lake. I yelled her name :- "CHAZ! CHARLOTTE!!" but she didn't even look up. In desperation, Jessie launched herself out of the window. I was sure she'd break a leg (that's coming from someone who lived with humans for years) but she landed gracefully, and her flipflop didn't even come off. She bolted towards Charlotte, and I jumped out of the window and followed.
We reached Charlotte, puffing and panting, and she looked very angry.
"Don't follow me."
"Why?" Jessie asked, surprised, her scottish accent rippling in her words. "We're your best friends."
"Yes. You are. But - I just wan't to be alone, right now, I-"
"- 'think I'm going crazy, I'm really upset, blah de blah," Jessie gabbled, until he nudged her sharply, almost pushing her into the lake. "OW!"
"No, I just - I really don't need friends or noise right now."
"We understand, Chaz - we'll go. Sorry about little Scot here." I said, sympathetically.
"Hey!" Jessie smacked me.
"Ok, ok - come on." I led her away, back to the castle, away from a friend in need.
