Under two months later, I stood in the whirling snow, in front of a grand palace. Two white marble columns held up a white marble building engraved with
SGK. I was in the right place. Walking inside, I saw kids my age and younger, girls and boys, walking around in crisp white uniforms. " um, excuse me."
Turning around I saw a young Japanese girl staring up at me. "You look lost. Are you new here?" She had a high squeaky voice and spoke in broken English. Smiling, I said "Yes, I am. Do you know how to get to the principals office?" She grinned a wide smile. "Of course! Follow me. I'm Annie by the way. I'm in sparrow hall, with all the other kids my age." Phew! I was glad I came across her. The place was huge! We came to a big oak door with the words prof./principal Lento. "Thanks Annie. See you soon." And with that, I opened the door. There was a small waiting room, home to a chubby woman with a nameplate that read " Ms. Linguine. Secretary". Setting my bags down, I asked "Um, could I see miss Lento?" The fat woman gave me a big smile and in a southern accent replied " Sure honey. What's your name, sugar?" Somewhere in me, I felt a zap. With out thinking, I pushed through the door with my shoulder. The office looked like something from the 18 century. With huge book shelves lining the walls, a couple old chairs sat next to her desk. The wallpaper and carpet matched. With a surge of adrenaline, I pointed my finger at a heavy book that was about to fall on a a middle aged woman - who I guessed was ms. Lento- and yelled "stop!" For a moment everything was still. And than the book stopped, just hanging in air. Ms. Lento fainted. When ms. Lento came to, I finally started breathing again. I grabbed the book and set it gently on the desk. I could see now that she was about 30 or 40. Her silky blonde hair was pulled up into a tight bun, the elastic matched her bright green pantsuit. Thick rimmed glasses made here brown eyes look gigantic! I gulped, ready to face the usual 'get away from me! You're a freak' talk. " are you mad at me?" The words trembled, just like my hands. " mad? Ha ha!" She sounded like a madman. "Darling, I am absolutely proud of you! You saved me from an major injury! Was that the first time you've done that?" My shoelaces suddenly became very interesting. " uh, no. I've been doing it for all my life. Is that weird?" She laughed again. "Not at all! You see, EPA is the place were you need to be! There are lots of kids like you. We have speeders, healers, geniuses and strong guys. You are just one of what we call "powers"." I felt more at ease now. " thanks!" She gave me a booklet with school information and a key to dorm 13. "You're roommate is a wonderful named Felicity. Of course, you have room with high ceilings!" With a wink, she pressed a button and said " mr. Lopez, Mr. Benjamin Lopez, please report to the principals office." In a couple minutes, a guy who looked about my age had joined us in the big office. " Willow, this is this is Benjamin Lopez. He would be happy to show you around." Looking surprised at these words, he exclaimed " I would?" But with a glare From ms. Lento, he changed his attitude quickly. " I mean, yes, of course." Benjamin looked about average on the muscle scale. He had dark brown hair that seemed to always be in his eyes. His skin had a colour that looked like he was tanned, but only lightly. Under his breath he mumbled " it's always me. ""So, ms. Lentil, " "Lento" he corrected me with a kind of exasperated sigh. "What?" "Lento. Her name is 'ms. Lento'" he said her name with a sarcastic tone. "Yeah, her. I'm guessing you two aren't exactly best buddies." He stared straight ahead and then turned to me. "I practically live her office!" Oh. "So you guys are OK?" He laughed. "Are you kidding?! I HATE her." I chuckled. "Hey, earlier, I met a girl named Annie. She said she was in Sparrow hall. What's with that?" "Oh, that's to do with 'ms. Lentils' obsession with birds. Robin hall is five to seven, sparrow is eight to ten, owl hall-that's us- is eleven to fourteen and eagle hall is fifteen to seventeen." I was intrigued. "So, how old are you then? I'm thirteen next week, by the way." I personally just liked saying that sentence. It was like saying 'I'm a teen next week'. "Oh, I turned thirteen last month." Drat. He was older than me. We reached a big oak door with a gold thirteen by the knob. "Be prepared..." "Why should I- omigosh!" I entered Buckingham palace. There was a lush cream carpet (silk upon further inspection) two four poster beds with silk sheets, white with red trim wallpaper and to top it all off, a giant mural of angels in the ceiling. The mural was of angles all bowing in front of an alter. The angels wore white dresses with wings, quite beautiful actually.
Then one angel smiled at me.
