"MIIIRRAAAAAAAAA !"
"Gosh Addo, does the doctor allow Eggy to jump up and down like that?"
Addo smiled, "I quote, 'The happier, the better!' But again, that did not involve jumping like that. Honey, what do you say about staying happy and excited while sitting down instead of jumping up and down like a frog?"
Amairah sighed," Come on Eggy, you have to grow up now; you have a baby on the way! Poor Addo has had enough of handling you! Do you plan on allowing him to give some time to his baby when it’s born? Or is he still going to spend all his time taking care of you?"
"Cut it out you monster. He did not make that baby alone, I am the mother! And stop calling me Eggy,I hate eggs." Agatha whined.
Amairah giggled, "Really Agatha, do you ever plan on growing up? And so what if you hate eggs, you name is similar to eggs, like Agatha, Eggy; Egg, Eggy, Agatha you know!"
"And you are aware of how stupid that sounds, right?"
"How does it matter Eggy, as long as it does not make you stop loving me."
Agatha laughed, her brown eyes shining with adoration. "Mira, nothing can make me stop loving you."
Agatha was someone who you would put in the category of being beautiful inside out. A rich texture of brown in her hair, a little darker shade in her eyes, full pink lips and now a beautiful swollen belly that seemed to grow every time they met. She hugged her tight, not forgetting her belly in the process. "Oh Mira, I missed you so much, you should come more often."
"I keep asking your hubby to bring me here to meet you. But he says you don’t want to see me."
"What the hell! Her mood swings are enough without you trying to swing them more Mira. Say you were joking before she throws my pillow out of the bedroom after doing the same to me." Addo screamed at the top of his lungs.
Mira picked up both her hands high in the air in surrender position and smirked, "I have no clue why this bald man here is lying. What I told you was what he told me."
Agatha turned around with her back facing her husband, winked and whispered a ' Watch me' to Amairah. Then she turned around to Addo, "You Mr. are sleeping on the couch today!"
Addo pouted while both Agatha and Amairah laughed. But suddenly, Agatha turned serious and faced Amairah. She knew that face," OK so Eggy, do not give me that look, I really have not done anything this time."
"No silly, I have something important to say. This new guest, he is not coming here willingly. Shawn is bringing him here forcefully to get his mind off whatever is disturbing him, but this guy just moved here and Shawn says they met at bar where he was drinking a very harmful amount of alcohol. Apparently, he is sensitive and hard at the same time. No crude remarks at all. Get it?" She sternly ordered.
Amairah knew that her Eggy was not welcoming an argument here. She was too sweet to see someone hurt a person who is already disturbed. She somehow always knew how to react in a situation. Agatha had not sympathized with her when she had first told her about herself, all she did was empathize with her. They had gradually become the best of friends. It had always angered Amairah when somebody tried to give away their sympathy to her. That was also the reason why she had forbidden Addo and Agatha to speak of herself or her past to anybody.
Empathy often turns into love, and so Agatha and her were what you call 'soul sisters' today.
Soon the guests filed in, everyone met and greeted. Amairah was helping Agatha in the kitchen when Shawn came in and hugged them both. He was the closest to them of all of Addo's friends and Agatha's only friend was Amairah.
"Get lost shawny boy, you are not getting any of the dessert that Eggy made, it will be served only after dinner, even if you have been nice enough to not do anything that makes me fall face first to the ground yet." Amairah spoke with an evil glint in her eyes. He always did something or the other that would land her on the floor and she would take her revenge by making sure that he was the last one to be served dessert since he had sweet tooth.
Shawn was almost a kid brother to the both of them, even though he did not look even close to being a kid. He had beautiful blonde hair and the most striking feature of his face being his ever present smile. At Amirah's order, he whined and left the kitchen. Soon, the women compiled the dinner at the dining table, and waited for the men who had been discussing a news report.
After a while, Addo, Shawn, Alex and Chris returned, along with an exceptionally handsome man. Amairah though, did not notice his eyes that resembled the color of an ocean in the evening. Instead, she noticed the frozen ice in them. She did not notice his perfect jaw. Instead she noticed the odd way in which they were set, as if he had been offended by something. She did not notice his chiseled body that was so clear to make out despite his clothes. Instead she noticed his defensive stance, making him appear like he was closed up on anything and everything.
They were right, this man surely did not want to be here. His age could be somewhere twenty two to twenty four, but definitely not a day beyond that. Amairah wanted to instantly reach out and help him, in some way or the other. And this was not something unusual. She always wanted to take away all the pain in the world and throw it away in a place that no one can ever reach.
But how can someone who does not even own her own body, help another person? They were introduced, his name was Ruben, and except for the little he spoke while introducing himself and congratulating the couple, he spoke nothing at all throughout the night.
The first time he had looked at Amairah, he had looked at her for a little more time than the others. It could be explained this way, that he merely gave a glance of ten seconds instead of the regular five seconds which he obliged everyone else at the table with. But he did not look at her with love, lust or any other feeling. He only had a thoughtful look on his face.
The dinner party was soon dispersed, everyone thanked the hosts and Addo dropped Amairah off at the brothel.
Of course, she thought of Ruben that night, and the only thing that went on in her head was not how ridiculously sexy he was, but those extra five seconds. She had looked into his eyes for the last five seconds, and the emptiness in them had forced her to take in a sharp breath. It had appeared like the shallow side of a vast ocean. He had the most expressive eyes she had ever seen, and she had seen many.
It appeared like he had given up on everything, accepted his defeat in everything. That way in which his jaw was set, the way that said he was offended by something; those five seconds into his eyes told her, that it was the world itself that had offended him.
Why is this man so empty? What could possibly have happened to him that has made him so detached to his own surroundings? Hadn't she gone through pain too? Even she had been wounded, and she still feels the pain too. She misses her parents with every single beat of her heart. She hates every second she spends in a man's arms. And most of all, she hates the fact that there is no escape route for her.
But was his pain greater than her pain? Can there possibly be a suffering greater than her suffering, the suffering that had hollowed out that man, or was it because her wounds were three years old while his were maybe still fresh? But doesn’t her wound still sting like they did in the beginning?
And despite all that had happened to her, hadn't she accepted it and learnt to mask her sadness? This man was driving her insane with those eyes of his. She was a curious woman who for some reason could not rest until she knew what had happened to him. It was nothing romantic, only that sorrow had always been a magnet to her She would never see that man again, but she still wanted to know why he lived in his own shell.
Too soon, her rest hours were over and it was time for her next appointment. But by then, she had decided on a little something. She would ask Addo tomorrow what had happened to Ruben.
