Chapter 3

A week later.

"Good morning Lilly!" I greeted the woman who was crouching down, collecting daisies.

She looked at me with red eyes, and nodded at me. Something was wrong.

"Were you crying?" I asked her gently.

"No." She mumbled. He nose seemed to be running, and she wiped it away instantly.

I touched her soft, bare shoulder. She stood up to her full height, hugged my torso, and started to sob hysterically. I stroked her head gently, fingers working through the blonde tangled strands of hair.

"Lisa..." She sobbed.

"There, there..." I said in a soothing voice. Whatever happened, it was a very serious situation.

"She's sick." She continued.

I instantly thought about Lisa having a runny nose and sneezing. Did she catch a cold?

As if reading my mind, she replied,

"No, John. This is not a usual cold. Not even a fever. Lisa... She c-caught a

d-disease. It is unknown. I don't know how to cure her!" Lilly raised her voice.

"How about the healers?" I asked, "can't they help?"

"No," she shook her head, "even THEY can't." She closed her eyes for a moment, and sighed.

"I also heard there was a woman with a sixth sense." I whispered, still hugging her gently.

"She is having a vision." Another tear sled down her cheek, "Naina told us before the vision that it would hast for three days. I can't wait for that long." She took a deep breath in, "Lisa cannot wait either."

Once I heard that, I started to walk toward Lilly's house. I was determined to save a child that could have been an angel. Lisa had a pure, unique soul. She deserved to live.

"John, wait-" Lilly was walking behind me, but I increased my pace. Lilly had to jog to catch up with me. It must have been quite hard for her, because she wore a long, brown cotton dress.

"The disease might be contagious!' She warned. I didn't care. I wanted to see Lisa, who was like a daughter to me.

I stormed into the house, eyebrows furrowed. I was angry on how unfair life was. That innocent people had to die, and cruel people lived.

I opened Lisa's bedroom, finding a still body wrapped up in a blanket. Her face was covered. I could hear her heavy breathing - thank God she was alive.

I slowly lifted the blanket off her face, worried as if one wrong move would cost her fragile life.

My jaw dropped in horror at the pitiful sight.

Lisa's small face was covered in spots which were filled with puss. Her lips were swollen, and it seemed that worms crawled under her eyes.

Her hair was dull, and half of it was grey.

"Lisa..." I whispered.

She opened her eyes slowly. Her eyes were dull, lifeless.

"You will be ok..." I caressed her cheek. Her eyes were questioning. "I promise."

Once I had promised her that she would live, her tense body seemed to relax, and her eyelids closed.

I slowly walked out if the room. Lilly was crying. I comforted her as much as I could, and took off to see one of my friends; Robert. He was a retired doctor.

Robert retired not because of age -he was as old as me, 36 - but because he had earned enough money for a lifetime of luxury.

It took a 15 minute run to Robert's cottage. He instantly opened the door, and invited me in.

I explained everything about Lisa, her symptoms, looks, etc. His big green eyes darkened every single second of me describing Lisa's state. After I finished talking, we sat for a few minutes in silence.

Finally, Robert spoke. His eyebrows were furrowed, and I could almost see a glint of empathy once he spoke.

"I'm afraid..." He cleared his throat, and pulled back his raven-black hair, "The girl does not have a chance of staying alive."

I could feel my body trembling. Lisa would die. This was definite.

I rushed outside, unable to look back. I could hear Robert screaming my name, but I didn't respond.

Men were not meant to cry. They were meant to stay strong, no matter what situation. I was not a man.

I ran into a nearby forest, eyes stinging.

Suddenly, I saw some kind of shadow out of the corners of my eyes. Someone was following me.

I started to follow it, however the person which the shadow belonged to was out of sight.

I ended up near a lake. It was covered by trees, so not any passerby could notice it.

The air also felt heavier here than any other part of the forest. Strange, I thought. There was a small breeze, and it seemed to whisper something to me. What were those whisperings?

The air seemed to be heavier when I started to ascend toward the lake.

Unexpectedly, my surroundings started to change...
