I'm not all that clear on what happened next.. The voice on the phone kept speaking, but all I could hear was the slight ringing residing in my ears.

I was looking at Niall, and yet somehow, I was looking through him, into nothing. Then.. The darkness started closing in, I could feel myself falling, but I didn't feel myself hit the ground. I just sat in complete emptiness, all alone.

I woke up to find myself in an all white room with many beeping machines around and attached to me. It took me awhile to come to and realize it was a hospital room. I looked to my right to see Niall standing over me, worry drowning his face, eventually that worry was replaced with relief when his eyes met mine.

"What-what happened?" Was all I could choke out.

"Well, the doctors say you went into shock. Last thing that happened was you were on the phone, then you got extremely pale and you just passed out. I rushed you straight here when I couldn't wake you up." I sat there. Trying to remember the phone conversation.

"Cara. Who was on the other end of the phone?"

"I..I don't remember. Or at least. I don't thi-" Then it all rushed back in my memory.

The phone call came from the chief of police, he informed me my mother was...dead. I guess my subconscious had caught the rest of his explanation as I was zoning out.

I remembered him saying that it was the obvious suicide, a gun shot to the left temple. A neighbor had heard the gunshot and phoned the police immediately.

My father was no where to be found, and no one could get ahold of his cell. They even knew to call the local pub, and even they hadn't seen him all day surprisingly.

They were wanting me to come to the morgue to identify the body. How the hell was I supposed to do that? Go examine my mother's corpse and have to admit to myself and others that she was gone forever, what teenager could ever go through with that?

"Cara!" Niall snapped me out of thought.

"My mother.. S-she's de-dead.." Niall stood there, just staring down at me. I half expected him to pass out as I did.

"She shot herself after we left the house.. They want me to go identity her body. Ni, I don't think I can handle that. I-I jus-st c-cant.." I started sobbing, covering my face with my hands. I felt Niall's arms wrap themselves around me, trying to control my shaking body.

"If you need me to, I'll go for you. You just need some rest. You hit your head pretty hard when you fell." Right as he said that, the knot that had formed on the back of my head became known. I clutched the part of my head that was in pain only to find I was bandaged up.

Niall's arms hadn't left me, they rocked me back and forth and I felt my eyes burn from the tears that were forming. As they fell, Niall just wiped them away, still cradling me, humming one of his favorite songs. Eventually the morphine that was being pumped into my system and Niall's cooing put me back into a deep deep sleep.

Once I woke, it took me a while to realize it was the next morning. I saw something move out of the corner of my eye, turning my head only to see Niall sitting in the chair next to me dozed off. I tiredly reached over lying my hand on his knee. Shocked by the touch, he jolted upright in his chair, causing me to let out a small giggle.

"You're still here Ni?" is all my mind could come up with.

"Of course Cara.. I couldn't stand leaving you here alone." Worry raced across his face, but it was quickly replaced by excitement.

"The doctor told me as soon as you woke up you were free to go. Don't worry, I already have all your things packed and an outfit laid out to go home in." He gave me an uplifting smile, almost making me forget what put me here in this hospital room in the first place.

Niall opened the passenger door for me, helping me climb in, and slamming the door behind me. Once we were on the road, I expected him to take me to my house, but he started driving in the opposite direction. I gave him a very inquisitive glance, and just like he was able to read my mind, he answered my silent question.

"I'm taking you to stay with me in my house tonight. There's no way I'm letting you stay in yours tonight." The thought of my father quickly appeared in my head.

"What about my dad?" I said almost inaudible. Niall's grip on the steering wheel tightened as his jaw clenched at my words.

"He's missing. The police nor anyone else have yet to make contact with that prick.." I let Niall's words sink in. I was all alone..

My mum was dead, my dad had ran off, all I had was my best friend. I was silent the whole ride to Niall's house, and no words nor sounds left my mouth for the rest of the day.

***********************

It was around midnight when I felt myself dozing off on Niall's couch. I heard Niall's foot steps in the hallway, only to stop right behind me. He let out a small sigh before lifting me of the couch, carrying me to what I imagine was his bedroom. My eyelids refused to open to take in my new surroundings, but the next thing I knew, my head was being laid on a plush pillow and my body being covered by a duvet.

I slightly surprised me when I felt a second body sliding under the duvet, and I nearly woke when I felt a strong arm wrap itself protectively around my body. He pulled me into him, my back pressed firmly against his now noticeably toned chest. I wasn't going to protest against it, he made me feel safe for the first time in days.
