CHAPTER VIII

"Oh my God! Do you really live here?"

"Why?"

"It's huge!"

"It's not that big..." Alex said while laughing.

"No? Fuck, it's three times the size of my house. I knew your family had money...but I had no idea you were rich!"

"Stop exaggerating..."

"I never exaggerate!"

We got out of the car, walked to the front door and went into the house.

"Mom? I'm home!"

A woman-let's hope she's his mother! - quickly got out of the kitchen. Her red dress and perfectly manicured fingernails made her look so rich. She stopped once she saw us.

"Alex, are you introducing me to your...friend?"

Whoa. Her voice was probably more expensive than all of my clothes put together.

"Mom, this is Laurence. Laurence, this is my mom."

She came up to me and hugged me tightly. I can see where Alex got his friendly ways from.

"It's so nice to finally meet one of Alex's girlfriends..."

Wait, what?

"Mom..."

"Oh, sorry. It was rude to speak of your ex-girlfriends in front of your new-"

Wow. Alex didn't even tell his parents that he was gay! They even think he already had girlfriends! And now, his mom thinks I'm his new girlfriend! Shit.

"No. Mom, Laurence isn't my girlfriend" Alex interrupted.

"No?"

Now things got awkward. Really awkward.

"No, mom."

"I'm sorry. It's just...this is the first time you bring a girl home without telling me..."

Oh, fuck. I felt Alex stop dead in his tracks, before telling his mom we were going to his room and asked if she could tell us when dinner was ready. Once we were upstairs, he quickly closed his door.

"Oh, Laue, I'm really sorry. I didn't think she was going to react like that and talk so much..."

"That's not what bothers me, Alex."

"I know, I lied but I just really wanted you to come here! You never get out of your house or out of the hospital and I didn't know what to do to convince-"

"Alex" I cut him off. "What bothers me is that she thinks you're into girls. Why didn't you tell her the truth?"

"It's not that easy."

"Actually, yes, it is."

"No, Laurence, it isn't. You don't know what it's like to be constantly judged for something that's not even your fault."

"Excuse me? You know I know what-"

I was interrupted by the sound of my phone ringing.

"What?"

"Laurence Jones?"

"Once again, what?!"

"We need to speak about your brother."

"Miss, I promise you, there's nothing to worry about." The doctor said once again.

"Then why did your stupid nurse call me?"

"The medication we were giving him wasn't the right one, his reaction was perfectly normal. Of course, it should have been avoided."

"Go fuck yourself!"

I slammed the door in his face, with tears in my eyes. How can someone who has so many diplomas make mistakes this stupid? "Wasn't the right one." Do you think I'm an idiot?"

"YOU ALMOST KILLED HIM, YOU ASSHOLE."

I broke down. I don't know if this is about stress our about the fact that I only slept five hours in the last week, but I broke down. I burst into tears, sitting on the floor. I cried and cried until an imbecile walked into the room.

"Miss Jones? Are you hurt?" little Bieber asked.

"Does it look like something hurts?"

"No, but you're crying, so..."

"Don't act like this matters to you."

"I-"

"If you're here to laugh in my face, just get the hell out."

He was standing in front of me, with his arms extended out, like he wanted to help me get up. His sympathetic look was making me so mad."

"Actually, I'm here to get you out of your brother's room so you can calm down."

"Oh, yeah, I know, no stressing atmosphere for the patient's recovery."

"Actually, I was going to tell you that he certainly wouldn't want to see you like that when he wakes up. I think he'd rather see you calm when he wakes up."

I couldn't help but smile. This idiot was right. Jord would kill me if he saw the state I was in for him.

"Let me help you get up."

I took Bieber Junior's hands and let him bring me in a near room, where there were lots of chairs for the patients' family and friends. It was empty at the moment.

Suddenly, he let go of my hand, just like if he felt electricity going through him. We sat on adjacent chairs.

"Aren't you supposed to perform an operation at this time?"

"You know, doctors need breaks too."

"You told me you were an intern."

"No, I'm the boss's son."

"Oh. There must be a lot of pressure on you then."

"You can't even imagine."

"I actually can."

He looked straight into my eyes. Two big puppy eyes were staring at me with all the desperation in the world. Just like no one ever listened to what he had to say. And slowly, so slowly that it took me a while to realize, he got closer to me and pressed his forehead against mine.

"That's unusual." He said, his voice only a little louder than a whisper.

"You can't even imagine."

In that moment, I felt his lips on mine.
