The bus pulled up next to my stop and Alisha followed me off the bus later that day.
I didn't even consider mentioning the scars to her as we entered the front door of my house. This would be my secret, I decided. Then I spoke up, "Follow me, there is someone I want you to meet!" I led Alisha out the back door and into the forest.
"Where are we going?" Alisha asked, excited.
"You'll see," I smiled despite my nervous anticipation of her judgment.
Alisha stared impatiently in front of us. She followed me to the rock I always met Shadow.
"And now we wait," I said, sitting on the rock with Alisha still close behind.
Soon a black wolf took form before us. "This is Shadow, my best friend."
Alisha jumped, surprised at the size of the animal. "A wolf?!? How did you meet?"
"It's a really long story. I took a run in the woods one night because I needed some air. I heard a howl and I followed the sound. I had always had this fascination with wolves, and I hoped to see one. I tripped on a huge rock, (this rock by the way), and found myself beside it. I climbed up onto it, looking for where I was. I had gotten carried away searching for the creature that howled. I was lost. A dark figure with glowing yellow eyes popped out of what seemed to be nowhere and growled at me. I backed up to the edge of the rock. It was risky, but I felt it was my only choice, so I put my hand out slowly to touch the wolf's nose. She shied away from me at first, then tried to bite me. I snapped my hand away and put it out again. That time she allowed me to pet her soft muzzle. I spoke softly to her and allowed her to get my scent. From then on, we always met each other at this rock. We have been best friends ever since. She was there for me when the rest of the human population seemed to reject me," I finished.
"Oh wow!" Alisha stared at Shadow. "You are a special wolf."
Shadow stretched her lips from one cheek to the other as if smiling. I smiled, too and there was a long silence. A peaceful silence. It lasted for a while, then Shadow finally broke the silence with a yawn.
Alisha and I just started laughing until we cried, still having no idea why a yawn was so funny to us.
