Chapter 6

She ran all night looking for some place safe to stay. David's apartment was not an option. She couldn't go back to that place. Never again. She ran to a park in the suburbs. A group was walking out and she could have sworn Kayden was with them. "Impossible." Kat said to herself as she went back to her human form.

A group was walking into the park laughing and talking. They spotted her and froze. "What if they're with Ide?" she asked. "Hey." a guy said, walking up to her. Kat snapped out of her frozen state. "Um. Hi." she said hesitantly. "You seem lost. Are you okay?" a girl asked worriedly. "Actually. I'm not, to be honest. I just ran away from - home, and I feel like I saw one of my brothers a minute ago." she explained. It wasn't all a lie. She did run away. But she didn't run from home and she did not see her brother. She thought she saw the boy she loved.

"Well. Why not stay with us? We're going to Dana's house for breakfast. Come with us." the girl said, painting a girl Kat assumed was Dana. "Okay. Sure." Kat said walking closer to the girl. "I'm Calissta." the girl said. She turned to face her group. Her long curly red hair flew about as she turned. Individually, she introduced the others. "That's Dana. My best friend. Over here we have Caleb, Josh, James, Carey, and Amanda." Calissta said.

They went to Dana's house and her mom had all the food on the table. Kat looked at everything, her fox running in circles. Dana smiled and pulled Kat to the kitchen. Dana's mom was smiling and cooking. "Oh hello darlin'! Are you Dana's new friend?" she asked, smiling sweetly. She nods, shaking the woman's outstretched hand.

After breakfast the bunch sat in the basement, and the TV was on very loud. Dana sat with Calissta. Kat sat with James in a quiet soace. "So, why would you run away from home?" James asks. "Can I trust you with a secret?" she asked. James nodded. "Yeah. Of course."

Kay focused on James. She was able to communicate through her mind. 'I'm not normal. This thought? I just sent to your mind. I have other abilities too.' His eyes widened. "Did you just-?" Kat nodded. He smiled, his eyes lighting up. Kat formed a patch of ice on the ground in front of them. "That's so cool." he whispers. Kat looked back up. Her eyes changing from brown to gold. His eyes widened and Calissta walked over to see what was happening. "Whoa."

A few nights later, everyone in Kat's new life loved her abilities. The only thing they didn't know, was about her story. She didn't plan on telling them.
They were at the park, hanging out, talking. Calissta sat on the bottom branch of a tree while Kat was standing on a branch about 5ft. up.
None of them knew what was about to happen. "Kat!" Calissta yells as a wolf walks up behind her. "What?" Kat asks. James points behind her, and she turns slowly. Kat jumped back quickly as she saw none other than Kayden, in his wolf form, standing behind her. "K-Kayden!" Kat yells in surprise. The wolf then took his normal human form as eight other people walk in.

James walks up next to Kat as Kayden looks at him. "Why would you run off?" Kayden asks. "The better question is why did you come look for me?! I told you I don't trust David! I'm not going ba-" "David's gone." Kayden said. Kat's eyes widened in shock as she walked up to Kayden. "Don't lie to me." she says, anger in her eyes. "I'm not."

"Yes you are! You're horrible at lying." Kat says. "Just come with me Kat. Rachel and the others have to be waiting." Kayden said. "You're not even with them! I thought you were a leader." Kat says as tears flood her gold eyes.

Kayden grabs Kat's shoulders, holding her still. James tried to intervene, but Annie pushed him away. "Listen. Rachel went to find the others. She told me to focus on finding you." Kayden said. Kat looked at his arm, ink peeking out. "Oh yeah, some looking you did. You got a freaking tattoo!" she yelled.

Kayden tried to pull Kat in, but she broke away from his grasp. "No. I'm not going back!" yelled Kat. Kayden looks at her, his eyes changing to ice blue. His wings unfurled, wrapping around him and Kat. "Don't. Challenge. Me. Katarina." Everyone around started to scatter in fear. Kat backed away slighty, bowing her head.

"I'm s-sorry."
