My perspective:
I feel like fanfics are a highly abused genre of books. Some of them are almost as sexual as the dirty romance books. As a person interested in criminal profiling and psychology I can say that the thing that bugs me the most about them is the changes in behavior or central personality traits such as Malfoy turning nice or Harry and Hermione suddenly falling in love despite the fact that the story went in a totally different direction. I also feel like fan fiction is training wheels and if you feel truly inspired write something similar but not exactly the same. My story, Gregory Driscoll, is largely influenced by different sources as can be seen with his apartment number being the same as House's and Sherlock Holmes's. Yes I stole the first name from House, but his character is meant to be a mixture of House's personality and another in a new setting.
Babygirlgame's perspective:
fan fics are whatever but at times they get annoying, when someone knows that a book is good why do they have to go LOOL and sometimes the fan fic is worse then the actual book, there's a reason why the writer wrote the book like that there's a reason why the characters die, fall in love, move on at the end and its not meant to be messed with
Frakkevin's perspective:
I’m not a fan of fan-fics anymore. That doesn’t mean I dislike them, because it’s how I started writing. I got inspired by a TV show and decided to write using the same characters. I think fan-fics are the first step into becoming an author instead of just a writer. It’s up to that person to decide if they’re ready to break free and do their own work. A lot of author’s on Wattpad do fan-fics and I admire those who take risk and also try to do their own work. InternetJunkie for example. She wrote a very popular fan-fic, but wasn’t afraid to break free and do her own work. As for those who rely simply on writing fan-fics, it’s just plain lazy. Take off the writing training-wheels, get out there, make your own characters, you can do it.
Sariten's perspective:
In all truth, I have no true opinion on fan fics. Some of them are wonderfully written and follow the story that was previously set, but with different characters, different interpretations and perspectives. Others... Well, they try to create a whole new story using the same characters but none of the same environments, kind of making the story seem hostile and it in turn repels potential readers
Amyscence's perspective:
I think that most fanficts are written by 14 year old girls who just want to use their favorite fictional characters to fulfill their sexual fantasies. Just saying, home dog.
Misguided_Angel's perspective:
To be honest I hate fanfics, I think its dumb to write about something thats already been done, it doesnt matter whether you like that certain book or movie. I can't stand to even read one its just the fact that when your reading a fanfic they mess the whole origin of the movie or book, the whole idea of it adding extra characters and ideas to it. if you wanted to do all of that why dont you just start a book with your own ideas, not pulling off of something thats already been done. Maybe it can inspire you but messing up something that was creative... and smashing your ideas with it messes it up haha..
JSthewriter's perspective:
Why are they all harry potter or twilight!? Why!? I don't understand. That and Harry Potter was a fabulous book, why do people constantly want to add 'their twist' on it. I can't stand that! I loved Harry Potter, and the fact that all these people are trying to put something 'more' in, such as Snape having this super secret daughter, or Malfoy pining over the love of some girl- Why? Just make your own story up! You're twists are so far off of the story that they could be a new book!
IBeKen's perspective:
I personally don’t mind most fanfiction, as long as it sticks to the story, and the characters aren’t making out every two seconds. I think almost every either starts out writing a really bad story, or a fanfiction. One of my first stories was a fanfiction, and I think they’re kind of like the crawling stage of writing. Before you can walk, make up your own ideas, you have to crawl, fanfiction. It really depends on the writer, for me. Some like InternetJunkii, have made it very far with their fanfictions, and are amazing at them. Over all, some fan fictions are good, and some are bad, but it’s just a style of writing, don’t like them? Don’t read them.
NeverShoutAlex's perspective:
I hate fan fiction. Really. I can't get into it. They always fuck it up. Its never the same. Don't jump off the bay :)
InternetJunkie's perspective:
Fan Fiction in my opinion, is rather amazing. In our heads, we all imagine what a book should have been like. Chances are, you all wish Bella had died in the first Twilight book, or you wish she'd have stayed with Jacob. Fan Fiction gives you the oppurtunity to write the book how you would have liked it to go. Most people who dislike fan fiction seem to think that the original author would hate to have their works copied and screwed up to all kinds of hell.. but I dont see it like that.
I would think that the original author would be happy knowing that someone liked their story enough to bother writing a fan fiction about it. I mean, sure you're changing things about the book, but that only makes it more enjoyable for you. Hell, if Stephanie Meyer or J.K Rowling read some of the fan fictions on here, they'd probably wonder why they hadn't thought of that.
Some people completely ruin a book when they write a Fan Fiction, I can agree to that. Some Fan Fiction authors go way too far when they write. Some just write the exact same book with the exact same details from someone else's point of view, and that's where it goes bad. It's like rereading the original series all over again. Some come up with their own story lines that fuck up everything and rearrange the series of events so that nothing adds up, leaving loose ends everywhere.
However if you can find a good author, who knows just how to write it, Fan Fictions aren't bad, though they are rather addicting.. You've been warned!
