KevinHalon's perspective:

Advertising your stories on wattpad is a good idea for the obvious reason that you want people to come and take a look at your stories. Seems harmless enough, right? Unfortunately, it comes with a price. Yes, I'm talking about the dreaded read for reads that infest the Share Your Story club (the only place you are allowed to advertise). If I was to post on that club for people to read a story, within 2 minutes, the post has been swallowed up by 100 read for reads. Why can't people just advertise their story without the need to feel pressured into rewarding that user for reading? Another problem with that club is when people say they will read your stories, but, only if you read, vote and comment on their story first. 9 times out of 10 it's a con and they never do what they said they would, so you're left having wasted 'x' amount of time reading only to find your own reads, votes and comments are still the same.

I think wattpad need to either abolish the read for reads and get that club back to basics or create a new club that is strictly advertising only.

In the meantime, I advertise on every club in the form of product placement. It's not classed as direct advertising and therefore breaches non of the rules. The majority of my fans have been collected from using this method and until the above problems have been addressed and corrected, I will continue doing so.

Loveforever27's perspective:

Advertising stories is fine: if your in the Share Your Story group. Wattpad always says to go there to advertise. Why don't writers? It's annoying (especially for writers who don't get many comments/votes) for anyone who has a story and someone posts theirs on it. I try to be polite, but it's not fun. Even when the reader says: 'I know this is rude, but... I have an AMAZING story and I really want your opinion' It's inconsiderate. It's not fair to people who go to their email or news feed and see someone commented on their story.... and then realized it's just advertisement.

Even if the person talks about your book first. They should read and comment, then go to your profile to see if you read, and then follow rules if you do.

It's disgusting to do otherwise.

KIDmimi's perspective:

I think it's really rude and disrespectful when people advertise their stories on other people's stories and/ or walls. If people need me to read their stories they should send me a private message because if you post it on my wall I will delete and if I feel douchey I might jut report you ;)

I hate how people do it though because they make it out as if it's perfectly fine. I once had this person who commented on my story saying : "OMG I love your it's like so WOW. If you like this I think that you'd like my story 'blah, blah blah'"

One, I don't like my own own (don't ask me why) and two, just no.

I was feeling completely douchey so not only did I delete their comment because it was quite obvious that they hadn't read my book but I reported them and sent a bunch of insults their way :D

xangelsmomx's perspective:

On any given day I'm all for advertising; hell I'm guilty of it myself. How else is a writer supposed to get her works read? But, that being said...... there are certain unspoken rules that should be followed. It's mostly common sense really but people being people.... that is something that some have a considerable lack of.

So here's a few rules to live by in Watty World:

1. It's okay to go to the share my story board and do read for reads.

2. It's NOT okay to plaster a comment on MY story stating, "Read my story, It's My Brothers Best Friend is in Love with Me," neglecting to comment on my work in the first place.
