How do we deal with the horrible monster called guilt that follows us around all day when we have done something we regret? The monster just never leaves us alone. The truth is we have all faced this green monster when we've done something really bad and its usually because of the fear of someone we love finding out the truth and never trusting us again or worse hating us forever. We spend loads of time just wishing we could rewrite the past. However, we cannot rewrite the past or alter it and that is just the plain sad truth. Here are some steps we can take to get rid of the guilt:

1) Accept that you did something bad. This step is probably one of the most important ones because many times when we do something we deeply regret, to feel better we deny that we even did it to everyone including ourselves. The sad truth is sometimes we even deny it so much that we ourselves begin to believe our very own lies. This needs to be avoided as it is DANGEROUS! Before saying anything especially if you are prone to lying do  this; look in the mirror and say I (your name) did something bad, then tell yourself through the mirror everything that you did from the start to the end with no sugar coats or subtractions. This will help you to understand the intensity of what you did and to accept that hey I did that, but that doesn't make me a horrible person.

2) Confront or Fix it! now this is the hardest and most important step ever. We need to confront the person who  our actions affected  whether directly or indirectly. Now this is hard and be aware of the possibility that that person may not forgive you, they may hate you for a very long time, they may never trust you again or they may just let it go and brush it off like it never happened. I know that depending on the intensity of what you did the whole brushing off thing will NEVER happen and they WILL HATE YOU! Well look at the bright side confronting is not the only option. You can FIX IT! However, not all situations can be fixed sadly. for example; if you cheated then don't try to cover it up just tell the person. Trust me your relationship will stand a better chance if you are honest than if she/he found out. Some situations on the other hand can be fixed like if you broke a phone that you weren't supposed to have in the first place or you stole something and they might find out it was you. You can fix the phone and put it back and you can return the thing you stole silently. Vow to yourself in the presence of God not to steal again. It is important that when you fix it, you do not miss the lesson.

3) Seek forgiveness and forgive yourself. This one is important but the easiest of all steps. more than likely what you did was bad and it was sinful hence, you need to seek forgiveness so you can have a guilt free conscience. This is easy just go on your knees or not, but really all you have to do is pray and tell God all that you did and express to him how much you deeply regret it and he will forgive you because God is a merciful and forgiving God. Next forgive yourself this one might be a bit harder but it's also important so don't overlook it. Understand that you make mistakes and you are not your mistake give yourself a break and tell off that monster! you are worth it no matter what you did whether you were a prostitute, a murderer, a cheater, a thief, a drug addict, a bad mother, a bad father, a rebellious child, or an abuser. The moment you realize you need to change your life CHANGE IT! we all have bad pasts some darker than some, but forgiveness has no preference. Don't be too hard on yourself and drop people who are too hard on you and who keep judging you based on your past and not for who you are becoming or trying to become. But now importantly the biggest and best change that you can have in your life is Jesus.
