The moon slowly looms over the horizon, the sun retreating as it comes into view. The first of the stars awake from their faded dreams and twinkle like crystals. Plains and forests are lit only by the slight glow of the full moon. A howl rises into the thick mist and bursts into a beautiful song, it rings in the evening air and sets a tone in the land. It' the song of farewell, a song to remember an animals life that was taken. "May you have a safe trip to your dreams!" Zencore, the pack leader howls and rises to his feet. He walks slowly and thoughtfully towards the body, the caribou lay lifeless on the ground. "Your life has been honoured" he whispers and calls the feast to his mate and betas.

The feast will not last long, it will be gone in less than and hour and then the struggle will continue and life will turn into some of the hardest of times. No wolf can be prepared for what lie ahead in their lives, not even the strongest of all wolves in the glistening valley pack and out of it are prepared.

Midnight brings a whole new feel to the land, in particular, the totem ring. The glowing night goes silent no howls no hoots of owls or scampering of mice and vole. Just eerie silence.  The world becomes pitch black, even for the owls and other night flyers, midnight is not the time of adventure. The only sounds are the soft breathing of sleeping animals and their hearts slowly beating in their chests. For wolves, it is the only time of peace. It's the only time you can relax without your ears twitching in annoyance from the squealing of pups and the growls of pack rallies.

Though the glistening valley pack ate, the mouths are going dry, no water or blood. Winter is not a welcome visitor in this land. "Rissa, this is impossible!" Zencore growls, "Our pack will die!"                                                                                                  "Have faith in us" She says calmly, "We are not lucky but we've made it this far." Zencore snarls, "No!"he growls jumping to his feet, his shadow looming over Rissa like a skyscraper. "I will not sit here and do nothing, I will not let my pack die in the hands of its leader, it would be unworthy!" He shouts angrily.

Zencore circles the den, eyes intent on Rissa, she watches him circle her. "You and I must leave, we have to-" Rissa cuts him off by growling, "I will not leave this pack to die, you may, you can coward, you can run from your fear but I will not!" Zencore jerks his head up in surprise. Males are the main pack leader, and are never challenged by their mate. "you have a right to leave, go ahead do so, I will find hope without you, I will live and so will this pack. Go, go now, become a lone wolf, I deny you" Rissa had risen to her feet shoved her ears forward and rose her tail high into the air. Zencore laid back his ears and tucked in his tail, the words "I deny you" was the most hatful sentence that could ever be said by wolf. They were always said to their mates, to say they were done, but Rissa said it so aggressively it made him tremble.
"There will be changes!" She shouts through the den sites, she turns back to Zencore who is staggering to the mouth of their den, "and you will be one of them" she growls.

Aspen staggers top the mouth of the den amongst the rest of her siblings and sits quietly at her mums feet, "What's happening?" She asks in a whisper.
"Shhh, I'm not quite sure" she leans down and whispers into her pups ears, she glares at Zencore who was slowly walking away. Aspen stared in amazement, she had never seen a female act so strong toward a male. The alphas den was dead ahead of Aspens and her families. She could clearly see Rissas posture and tried to mimick her. She puffed her chest out leaned forward to make her self look somewhat like a German Shepard. She shoved her ears forward and bared her teeth, yet made no sound. Aspen's siblings began to notice and trotted over to her, they also mimicked Rissa and soon began to prance around proudly around theirs mums feet.

"I want to be like her" Aspen thinks glaring longingly at Rissa.
