To Breathe Fresh Air

“You know, you really don’t have to.” I tugged but he wouldn’t let go of my hand. At first it was like a game of tug-of-war, but now, he just pulled me as if I’m not making any resistance. “I won’t tell mom. I promise.”

He finally stopped walking. Unluckily, we’re already in front his Audi everyone loves. “Get in.”

“We’re riding that?!” I don’t mean to imply anything because hey, it’s an Audi and I don’t get to ride that every day. The fact that it’s closed that scares me. He just stared at me still annoyed. Who wouldn’t when mom, who is the principal of this school, told him to bring me home as punishment?

That is an Audi,” he replied nonchalantly.

I was able to pull my hand and cross my arms. I agree that he’s handsome and all, but with that arrogance and fucking ego, he won’t pass for my standards. “I am aware Mr. Cervantes.”

He sighed as if it could help him control his patience. His face creased into a frown but still look handsome. “Just get in already. I don’t have all the time to argue with you.” He pushed me towards the right side.

“Waitwaitwait! You see, I can just ride a jeepney going home. I’ll tell mom you did your task. No one will know. Everybody’s happy, right?”

Instead, he opened the door and tried once more to push me in to the passenger seat. With all the strength I can muster, I was able to fight back. There is no way I’m getting inside.

“Get in, will you!” It was a demand of course. His voice is always on maximum volume, which makes me think: doesn’t he get sore throat or anything alike? Talking, on his case, shouting is pretty tiring. Even I can’t do it without my throat hurting. Mom, too. And here he is, as if it was just nothing.

“My offer is very much open, Mr. Cervantes. It will save you from the burden of taking me home. Plus, you can just scamper to wherever you usually go. I’m actually fine by myself.”

“What is your problem, woman? There are a lot of other girls who’d die just to ride with me. And here you are, lucky enough —“

“Woah! I am not considering myself lucky. Those girls can die on their own. And besides, I really like to ride a jeepney today. To breathe fresh air.” He gave me a blank look but I’m reading it as breathing-pollution-is-not-fresh-idiot look. “Okay, not so fresh.”

He sighed and resumed to pushing me. But stubborn as I am, I resisted. “Just get in already.”

I was busy pushing back but I noticed something. He could have said so earlier and we wouldn’t be in this situation. “This is a convertible? Why didn’t you say so?”

“You didn’t ask smartass.”

“Psh. I’d get in if you open it,” I said, showing my best smile. He sighed and when I thought he’s going to argue some more, he went to the driver’s seat. Not later, the hood moved and I can finally see the inside.

“Hop in.”

“Gladly.” I hopped on the seat. I caught him rolling his eyes, but I don’t care. He can roll it 360 degrees or in any angle any time he wants.
