When I awoke the lights in the room surrounded me in a bright white. The pain surged through my body as I cracked open my eyes to see where I was. The room reeked of antiseptic, and it was making my head throb. I saw the panel ceilings and I instantly recognized where I was. The look of the cold walls that have seen so much seemed smaller than the last time that I sat in this room. But the last time I was here it was opposite; he was in the bed, not I. maybe that was what the difference here was. I was being put into Mitch's shoes in his last couple hours and I do not even know how I got to where I am right now.
I reached around to the back of my head and felt the bandage that was tightly wrapped there. I sighed, 'what could have happened to put me in this bad of a situation?' Suddenly the door to my room creaked open and a woman in a white lab coat stepped into the room before me. I tried to push myself to a sitting position but my strength failed me in my attempt to move.
"No, do not move Anna. You will only make things worse for you in the long run. My name is Doctor Leah Adams and I have been the one that was taking care of you the past few days. Do you remember anything Anna?"
My face swirled up in confusion, "No I do not. I do not even know how I got here in the first place. Everything is so confusing and I do not understand it at all. Could you explain why I am here, what happened, and why my head feels like someone took a baseball bat to it?"
"Well that is exactly what had happened Anna. You see, you were robbed a couple nights ago and attacked in the process of it."
"What do you mean? I do not remember any of that at all. All that I remember is thinking about my engagement with Mitch."
"Mitch? Who is that? It does not say in your file that you were ever married."
"I was not married." The tears started to well in my eyes as I started to explain, "Mitch died a few weeks ago before we were able to marry. Our wedding was planned for next month on September 12th." My body was shaking and the tears were streaming down my face at this point.
"Oh ma'am I am so sorry for your loss. I had no idea that was what had happened."
"No your fine, I guess I should get used to the idea by now." I retorted.
"Okay, well anyways, you were robbed on Saturday night and in the process of that you ended up coming home. The robber hid and when you walked past him you took a blow to the back of the head causing a major brain hemorrhage2,which essentially is just bleed in the brain cause by a hard blow to the head. It is not in an area where surgery is needed but medication is. I am going to prescribe you a painkiller and something to help keep the swelling down when you go home, but for now I need you to stay here and rest so we can monitor you since you live alone."
"How long exactly will I be here? Also, do you guys know who it was that broke into the house?"
"We have no information on the crime scene, just that you took a hit to the head, and you will be here for one or two more days."
I nodded as she got up to leave the room. She turned around before she got to the door and said, "By the way, if you need anything just hit the call button on your bed beside you." With that she walked out of the room, making sure to close the door behind her.
I turned on the T.V. in the room and began to play with all the widgets in the room. Soon enough I found myself entranced into the I-pad that was set on the table beside me. My eyes quickly began to get heavy as my slumber pulled me into its reach.
My sleep was broken but comforting from the headache that the pain medications were doing no help with. The doctors would come in and check my vitals occasionally before leaving me alone to drift back into my dreams. They were a not nightmare tonight which was a relief, but none of them really made sense. One was about the roses and finding out that the man that was stalking I was Mitch's brother. Another took me back to my childhood house with my sister. The last was me back at my house just going through my monotonous morning routine with Mitch that I did every morning, until my life took a turn for the worst. They were all happy and settling to the mind.
When I woke up the next morning the sun was peeking through the shades in my room and a breakfast was laid on the tray that was next to my bed. The antiseptic smell had faded, that or I had grown used to it in the hours that had passed. Doctor Adams entered the room quietly before realizing that I had already woken.
"Good morning Anna, how are you feeling?"
"I'm feeling better, the pain medications could be better though."
She laughed before sitting down on the stool by my bed. She got my blood pressure and pulse before looking at me and smiling. "Good news Anna, if you continue to progress in the way that you are now we could have you going home in less than a week."
A smile formed on my lips as happiness flowed through my body. "Oh thank you so much Doctor Adams. I know that if it was not for your help I would not be this far along in my recovery and for that I owe you everything that I can possibly give you. You are truly amazing!" I pulled her into a hug with tears welling in my eyes due to the happiness that was rushing through me.
"Well Anna that is kind of my job." She replied as she pulled out of my embrace. "I wish you well and really hope to be getting you home as soon as we possibly can. I will be back tomorrow to see how you are progressing." She got up and headed out of the room. "Oh, and I will see what I can do about some more pain medications for you, the less pain you are in the more you can rest. Which just gives you time to recover and gets you out of here, on your way quicker."
This was the first time in a month that I had a real smile on my face, with true happiness to back it up. Life seemed like it was finally going to start turning better for me.
