Mr. Bryar told me to take a seat near the back of the class. Thank goodness for that. I walked to back of the class and into the corner. As I was walking, I could feel the stares of the other students baring a hole into me. I hear a few giggles from the other side of the class, probably laughing at the overused amount of eyeliner and my shaved and dyed head.I sat down next to a kid who had a ginormous fro. And when I say ginormous, I mean his fro was the size... I don't even know, to be honest. It was incomparable to anything. Anyway, when I sat down he greeted me with a small smile and his name.
"Sup, Frank. My name is Ray Toro. Sometimes they call me princess fro fro though, so your choice."
"I can see where they get the name. It's very suiting." I reply.
We both turn around to face the front of the class and end our minimized conversation. At least he seems like a nice kid, considering the fact he hasn't called me any names or harmed me.
For the next I don't know how long-I wasn't paying any attention to the time or Mr. Bryar speaking-I was in my own world as to how to make friends with Ray. I had no idea why I even had the guts to bring it up in my own head. He just seemed like a cool person to be friends with. I need at least one friend in this school.
I finally get the courage to speak up.
"So uh...Ray. Um, what kind of music do you listen to?"
"Well, I listen to bands like Metallica, Green Day, stuff like that. I really like your shirt, Frank. It's pretty awesome." He says as he points to my chest.
"Oh, uh, thank you."
"Ya know, Frankie, I wouldn't mind being friends with you. I can understand if you're scared to talk or step up, just because of the way people think of you and create a bad reputation. I have had quite a few friends like you. It's okay."
I didn't know how to break the awkward silence after that. I surely did hear him out though. Ray had a calming feeling he let off and I felt like I was okay to be myself in front of him, even just knowing him for a minimum ten minutes.
"Thanks, I uh, I appreciate that."
"No problem, man. Just tryin' to help boost your ego cause it seems like that's what you need. No offense."
I smile to him, or myself, either one, and give him a nod. A bond is officially made. On the first day. That boosts my confidence 2% higher. Ray Toro, God of Afros, is my friend.
Class is over a short while later. Ray and I head separate ways as we leave the classroom exchanging our goodbyes. I pull out my schedule to see my next class: precalculus.
After I found the door to the classroom, I made the same actions I took for the first time arriving to a gateway of possible bullying and shitty people. My skeleton-gloved hand is set on the freezing metal handle and pushes down, allowing me access to push open the door and walk in. I do so slowly and face the teacher. The teacher is a female this time. She stands from her desk but stays there. I guess it was just a form of politeness. Her mouth opens as she is about to speak.
"Hello, Frank?"
"Yeah, it's Frank."
"Well, I'm Mrs. Ballato. Welcome to my classroom. You may take your seat over there next to Pete."
She points to a kid in the middle of about 15 or so other students. One of the kids blurt out, "Hey! We got another emo fag for Pete!" Mrs. Ballato makes no comment to the kid's statement.
He, Pete, raises his head as it was down and makes eye contact with me. He has a look a fear and shyness in his eyes. He probably sees the same in mine.
I proceed to the empty seat next to him and make no hurry to sit down. He looks at me with wide eyes and I look back with a forced smile, not showing my teeth. I take this moments to realize he's a decent looking kid. Dresses kinda like me. But I'm ugly. So the facial features are off from mine.
I ended our uncomfortable stares by quickly looking away. I then heard another student giggle. Fuck that laugh was cute. And I haven't even seen the face it belongs to.
I decide to ignore it and barely pay attention to what Mrs. Ballato is talking about. But then I heard the same adorable giggle a second time. I could hear that for the rest of my life and be perfectly okay with it. I averted my eyes and turned my head the locate the face giving off the laughter.
Holy shit.
So you know the saying 'Love at first sight'? I think I'm having that moment right now. Cause to be honest, the face that I saw made the laugh a million times better.
As soon as I made eye contact with him he looked away. The teacher called him out for "distracting other students".
"Gerard, what's so funny and more important than this lesson?"
Gerard. That's his name. I have to remember that.
"Oh, nothing much. Just laughing at how I'm gonna beat somebody's face in after class."
Gerard's face had a smirk on it and god damn he was attractive.
But then I thought for a moment. Oh god. He probably meant me. I was that somebody. Why does the cute kid have to beat me up?
Mrs. Ballato gave Gerard a glare and resumed to whatever she was babbling about before.
I realized I was still looking at Gerard as soon as he waved in my direction. I made my eyes the size of the moon as that wave was a sign that I was the one that was gonna get punched.
I look away from his piercing gaze and put my head in my hands. I begin to shake it. For some reason it's more terrifying when you know you're gonna get bruised.
Time passes and it's time to leave to go to next period. I see Gerard stand and make his way to the door slowly. We make accidental eye contact. He knew I was expecting it. But I know as sure as hell that I was not prepared because Gerard looked like a tough kid.
I push myself from my desk and grab my things. I walk to the door with my head down. Fuck.
