Cat's POV:
I was awake, but somehow unconscious at the same time. Everything was bathed in white blinding light as I felt myself rising slowly, but not seeing myself going anywhere. I was floating through time and space, aimlessly.
Is this what it felt like to die? I thought.
Hushed voices surrounded me, whispering things I couldn't understand. They sounded muffled and distorted like I was underwater, and they were above the surface, watching me drown.
"Do you think she's okay?"
"Now, now Peter, she'll come around soon enough."
"What if she goes to-"
"She won't Joseph."
Vague memories attached themselves to their names like loosely tied strings, but I could not recognize the reassuring voice that replied to them. I tried with all my might to open up my eyes, but they felt as though they were sewed shut.
I focused on the sound of the watery voices, concentrating my mind on consciousness. I felt a fluttering beneath my eyelids, like a butterfly attempting to escape its cocoon.
"She's opening her eyes!"
And just like that, it felt like I came out from under the water's surface and allowed my eyes to open slowly. They stung for a moment as they adjusted to the equally blinding white light.
To my surprise I was already standing, clothed in the exact same clothes I had worn last, except they were all white.
"Welcome my dear." A warm deep voice echoed in the room.
I knew I should have been scared, but somehow I felt everything that was happening was normal, and the voice I heard was filled only with love.
I wasn't constantly in fear any longer.
"Cat!"
Bodies flung themselves against me, and I was covered in other people's white garments. They pulled away slowly so I could see them.
Joe, Andy and Pete stood grinning at me clothed only in white, as was I. I smiled back at them, happy to see them.
"Are we dead?" I asked, furrowing my brow.
"We're in heaven now." Pete explained "I'm still getting used to it myself."
"I actually went to hell first," Joe piped up "it was pretty awesome."
A deep bellowing voice cleared his throat.
"Uh, I mean, it was terrible. Eternal damnation...who wants that?" Joe stuttered, scratching his bouncy curls nervously.
I giggled out of habit at Joe's sudden change of tune.
"I think that's quite enough from you, Joseph." Suddenly, the figure that the voice belonged to stepped out, of course clad in a white suit. He was a short, rotund sort of man with a warm smile and rose tinted sunglasses. I didn't have to be told to know who he was.
"God..?" I whispered.
He patted me on the shoulder and smiled sympathetically.
"So is anyone going to talk about Patrick? What's going to happen to him?" Pete blurted folding his arms.
"As far as I know, he's still alive. He's the one that killed me." I replied, fumbling with my hands. I notice they weren't coated in mud and dirt anymore. Nice touch.
Joe snorted "join the club."
Andy elbowed Joe, silencing him. Death had not lessened his fatherly instincts when it came to his friends.
"He was possessed when he did it, it wasn't really him. Not our Patrick." I insisted.
"Don't make up excuses for him." Pete retorted. "He's the reason we're all here."
"Enough!" God roared, throwing his hands up. The whole room rattled, chandeliers and all.
"You'll see Patrick shortly."
"What?" All three boys said simultaneously.
"He can't come here! He killed us all!" Pete exclaimed.
"Peter, that's your best friend you're talking about. You really want him to go to hell?" God reasoned
Pete hung his head and shook it slowly. "I guess not."
"Very well. He'll be up shortly."
"So he's dead?" I piped up.
"It appears so, Catherine."
Even though I was already deceased, it still depressed me to think Patrick too was dead. In my head, alongside all my other memories of my past, normal life,I still remembered the sweet shy singer I had first gotten to know.
Suddenly a mechanical groan and grinding of metal shook the room.
"Looks like someone's early." God remarked, and the lift shuddered to a halt, and glowing amber eyes met mine in a dazed stare.
