"Kay! Time for Hogwarts!"
A few years later and no one remembered why Kai no longer spoke, choosing to distance herself even further.
Kaira slowly removed herself from the warm and homey comforter. At home she was able to see her family alive and safe, but at Hogwarts she didn't know whether they were dead or missing. She never wanted to worry her parents with the threat so she kept it to herself, even two years later she'd rather distance herself and prepare for the moment than have to tell them they had an evil wizard hunting them.
"Kay!" A small figure came hurtling into her room, an excited ball of energy. "I'm going to Hogwarts!"
Kaira couldn't help but smile at her brother. Valko had also inherited magic, their dads always told them it was probably from their biological mother. Ambrosia was the only one who wasn't from the same mother, therefore she didn't classify as a witch because she had no magic. Kaira seemed to remember her mission and turned away from the eleven year old bundle of excitement. His joy faded slightly until he remembered that he had to keep trying. Valko threw himself at Kay and gripped her arm, refusing to be sad.
"Amy said she'd come to the platform to see me off!" Kaira nodded and retracted her arm from Val's clutches. She picked up her trunk and headed to the stairs, not saying a word.
Valko didn't lose his spirits and ran to his room, happiness bubbling up inside of him as he remembered Kaira's description of the castle before she stopped speaking. Kay set the trunk in front of her parents, staring at the two, trying to memorize them. Father's warm honey eyes and shining gold hair, Dad's inky mop and icy blue eyes. Their vibrant personalities working together to form a perfect partnership and even more perfect parents. Kaira always said 'I love you' when she left for Hogwarts, she couldn't bear to ignore them for that. Especially if it might be the last time she'll see them alive and happy.
"We're just waiting for Valko," Father said, peering worriedly into her blue eyes. "You have your medication?"
Kaira nodded, shaking her backpack so Father could hear the rattling of pills. He relaxed and even gave her a wee smile. A loud crash and bang alerted the three to Valko's arrival as the boy fell head over feet, trunk flying over his head. Dad let out a chuckle and helped Val up, laughing harder at the scowl on his face.
"Let's go." Dad laughed, grabbing Val and Kaira's trunks.

Kaira watched the stormy mountains rush by in a blur, having found an empty compartment. Sadness clouded her mind, trying to break her. She felt as sad as a thousand sighs, when the dark winds sob through the yews. Trying to get back into the feel of magic, she levitated her book out of her knapsack. Soon enough, after a quick wingardium leviosa , Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Angel flew out of the backpack.
Commencing her reading, Kaira ignored the loud rambling of students in the aisle.
"You really shouldn't bother her Val..." A quiet girl's voice travelled into Kai's compartment easily, letting the 6th year know that her brother would soon enter.
"I'm her brother, it'll be fine." Val muttered, sliding the door open and letting himself and two other first years inside.
"Hey Val." Kaira murmured, glancing up from the intoxicating pages. To her, the paper was just as effective as the Firewhiskey Alex used to sneak into the dorm when she slept over in Gryffindor. The only thing that usually separated her and her best friend are their houses and their personalities.
"Kai?" Valko seemed shocked that his sister was speaking, after not hearing her voice in so long his heart ached. He wanted to get close to her, for her to love him again, but he knew that when she pushed him off her, it would hurt more than refraining.
"Hey kid." Her voice was still scratchy and unused after a whole summer of being at home but to Val, it still sounded like home.
"These are my friends," Val nodded to the two that had been watching the exchange. "That's Victoria Jorn," he motioned to a dark skinned girl, whose heavily braided hair Kaira admired.
"Who's this?" Kai stared at the seemingly shyer boy who was sitting across from her.
"That's Horace, he won't tell me his last name yet and doesn't talk much but according to Vic, he's nice." Val's honey eyes lingered on the boy, who's hazel eyes made Kaira self-conscious of her own blue.
Kaira nodded and noticed the boy gazing at her book, like a wolf would stare at prey. Kay pulled Val closer and he relished the warmth of her breath on his ear.
"He likes to read, talk about books." she whispered and then pushed him away slightly. Valko wished he could be held close again, like when he was younger. But his sister wasn't the same and he was trying to accept that.
"Well, I'm going to go change into my robes, you should too." Kaira got up and brushed her jeans of any visible dirt. She grabbed her backpack, which held her Ravenclaw robes, and left. She didn't like her brother's longing. She could sense he wanted to be held, like a child. It wasn't fair that it was being held over him like cheese in front of a mouse.
Kai had her head down as she travelled the aisle towards the washrooms at the end of the train. Not noticing a certain redhead rushing towards her.
"Oof!" Kaira fell to the floor, the other victim tumbling on top of her. "Watch it!"
"You watch it! I can report you to Dumbled--Kai!?" Lily Evans scrambled off her friend, who was lying on the floor, laughing slightly. The grin was strained, unused for the weeks of summer vacation. Lily frowned immediately, wiping the smile off of Kai's face. "You still haven't been speaking to your family?"
"I've spoken to Val." Lily had become used to Kai's short and snippy responses in fourth year when Kaira had started acting solitary. Lily's crimson eyebrows furrowed.
"I'm not sure if that counts, I mean your parents. Maybe even Ambrosia." the redhead said. Kai pushed herself off the dusty train floor, taking the offered hand of Lily.
The taller figure of Lily seemed to hover over her, making her chest feel tight. Kaira stared at the ground, taking short glances upwards to see if Lily had lost interest in the conversation.
"It counts..." Kai mumbled, letting a dirty blonde strand fall in her face. Lily sighed inwardly and tucked the strands behind her friend's ear.
"I just want you to take care of yourself," Lily blew out a puff of air and crossed her arms, her Gryffindor robes were draped over her left arm. Kaira clenched her eyes shut, not wanting to look into Lily's caring emerald eyes that reminded her so much of her sister. She didn't want another person to protect, she had enough already.
"I need to go see Alex." Kaira replied curtly. Lily watched her friend walk down the aisle, sorrow creasing her face.
"Why do you think she pushes everyone away, Lils?" Mary Prewett's head poked out of a compartment to Lily's right. The muggle born shrugged and entered the compartment, welcome emanating from every one of her friends.
She had Marlene, Mary, Alice, Dorcas...maybe she could even say she had Remus. Kai had Alex, and though Lily knew she liked it that way, she pushed away that thought and started formulating a plan.
