L would never let his personal feelings for Light hinder the investigation. But he was desperate when he figured Light had switched back to Kira's personalty after touching Higuchi's death note or lights original death note. He had no way to prove it though. He understood what was going on because Light acted differently towards him. In the end, L died knowing his successors would catch Kira, but L felt awful because he couldn't save Light.
