I blinked slowly, my mind struggling to comprehend what was happening.
They wanted the midnight tiger? They wanted me and not Shae? Well, someone had some serious explaining to do. Either that or the master had gotten his intel completely wrong.
"Excuse me, what?" the words burst from my mouth as I shot the tall figure a glare "Are you sure you heard me right? I said that she's the Midnight Tiger, why are you trying to shoot me?"
The man with the gun paused, letting out a dramatic sigh
"You're a mouthy one aren't you? But it's none of your business why the big boss wants her" he jerked his head towards Shae who was watching the scene wide-eyed "All you need to know is that she has no business with whatever bodyguard the tiger seems to have with her"
"So you're going to kill me?" I asked indignantly; sweat starting to bead on my forehead as I kept careful watch on the gun in his hand
"Well we're not going to keep you like some sort of weird pet" the squad leader rolled his eyes in disgust
"But wait, you said you were gonna let the other one of us go at least" I knew I was grasping at straws but suddenly facing the barrel of a gun wasn't so appealing
"I said I might" the leader snorted
"So you're a liar?" my reflexive smartarse response was out of my lips before I could filter it
"What?" the leader scowled "I'm not a liar, I-"
"So not only are you a child kidnapper and possible murderer, but you're a liar too?" I shook my head at him "That's disgusting. You're disgusting"
"I'm not a child kidnapper!" he was definitely getting pissed now, indignation filling his face
"And targeting teenage girls as well" Shae chipped in from beside me, sending a withering look in his direction
"That's sick" I added on, shooting him my most disgusted look
"It's not like that, I'm just following orders. I'm not a creep" the leader glanced to the side, a dark flush visible on his face despite the low lighting. Shae and I hid grins as he shifted uncomfortably, the other members muttering under their breath behind him.
I looked up, catching Jayden and Lachlan's eyes. They were both smiling slightly, and I felt my heart ache a little in my chest. We could've really been friends if things had been different
"Look enough! Stop! I'm not a pedophile!" the leader shouted loudly, swivelling to pin everyone with a stern albeit embarrassed glare. He swivelled back to me, the pure hatred in his look almost causing me to start laughing.
"Now, as I was saying" he cleared his throat, his airy professionalism returning once more "I said that I might let you go before, but I didn't promise anything"
I felt my heart sink once more as he raised his gun, his gaze victorious as he towered above me, a looming shadow against the cloudy sky.
"Hm, not such a smart mouth when you're facing death are you?" his voice was slow and silky, and I was almost hypnotised as my eyes tracked the movement of his gun. My mouth was dry, the world seeming to sway as the barrel drew nearer. I drew in a short hiccup of breath as the end of the cool metal touched my forehead. Pure fear washed through my veins as the true danger of my predicament was presented right before me.
"Haven't we shed enough blood today?" Lachlan's voice echoed across the roof, the sound almost distant in my ears.
My eyes flickered towards him, my heart clenching at the sight of his clenched jaw and the tightness around his eyes. On his left, Jayden looked a lot less composed; his posture was agitated, muscles tensed up as he glared.
