Chapter Five~
As I sat down in the high chair, I could smell the strong scent of scrambled eggs and toast wafting up my nose, going up to my brain to tell my stomach to respond in a rumble. Which it did.
I didn't know what time it was, but I knew it was far too early to wake up on a Monday, especially when my school holidays were just starting.
My eyes felt sticky and heavy as I tried to free them open, and when I saw the kitchen counter come to view, I saw Dad opposite me in his sharp grey suit, digging in to his breakfast in a rush, and Caiden, who had his back turned away, cleaning the dirty dishes that were left yesterday.
"Mornin' Dett," Greeted Dad with a mouthful of egg.
"Morning," I grunted back, eyeing the breakfast plate in front of me.
"Caiden made breakfast for us," He nodded. "Eat up".
I glanced at Caiden who was wearing the same black hoodie from last night but without the hood up, he was still silently washing the dishes without a word. I took the fork in front of me and started chewing the food from my plate, afer I swallowed I said "Thanks... Caiden,".
It looked like he was just finishing his job as he turned to the side, and I watched him dry a wet knife with a red cloth. He took his time cleaning it, and when he was satisfied, he raised the knife to the kitchen window where the sunlight was gleaming in, and then walked calmly over to my side and placed it beside my plate.
I glanced at him for a second, and our eyes locked just like a key in a hole. I was staring at a pair of vivid green eyes that looked like it belonged to a doll I used to own. They were the lightest shade of electric emerald I've ever seen, I was a bit taken a back.
"You're welcome, Odetta,"
Then he left the kitchen, and a moment later, I heard the front door open and close.
"Dad?"
"Yes, Dett?"
"Who is he?" I questioned, putting down my fork. "What's Caiden doing here?"
"Ah," Dad said, sipping on a glass of water beside him. "Well first of all, Caiden is a lovely, young man. So don't you worry".
I scoffed. "Why would I worry?".
"Well, he said to me this morning that last night when he came home you saw him and had a look on your face like he was about to murder you" He chuckled.
I laughed a bit too. "Yeah, it's just the way he was dressed" I explained.
Dad nodded. "The boy likes to dress dark on most days" He said. "But Caiden is like a housekeeper. He cooks, cleans, takes the rubbish out, goes shopping for food, and I trust him enough with the money I give him to pay the taxes. Sometimes I get so busy at work I don't have enough time to do all these jobs at home. I come home tired; the house is an absoloute state! Dirty clothes everywhere; dishes piled up in the sink; no food in the fridge, you know? And then several months ago, Caiden shows up. I invite him in, skeptical at first but then he says he has no place to go. So we made a deal: He can use the guest room as long as he does the usual housewife jobs" Dad spoke. "It's actually a pretty good deal between me and him, and we get along great! It's like having my own son in a way".
