"Now Ma listen." I interrupted.
"No! You listen, you don't think I have anything better to do than to sit here and worry about you. Running around the streets at all hours of the night. Just what do you think I'm made of anyway?"
"Ma listen," I pleaded.
Without taking a breath, she continued. "It's like I always told your father, god rest his soul, we have a wild one with this girl. Why can't you be more like your brother and settle down and get married?"
"Ma, if you'll let me explain."
With an annoyed sigh, she stopped talking. Someone was watching over me.
"Ma, I have a date."
"What?" A common reaction.
"A date,"
"With a man?"
I shook my head. "Of course with a man,"
Silence on the other end. I knew that would keep her quiet.
"Well, don't you want to know who with?"
Silence
"Ma you still there?"
"Yes," the response was feeble. She was afraid I was joking.
"It's a man I met at the B Quik Mart." I started to explain when she cut me off.
"Well what are you doing talking to me? Go get yourself dressed darling. Make yourself beautiful. Of course that's not too hard for my little girl. Oh I wish your father were here to see this." She was choking up.
"Ma it's one date."
"But you never know what it could lead to. Now go, get ready and call me tomorrow." The line went dead.
