IDINA
A Friday, a fun day, the school is overcrowded with anticipation and excitement for the weekend. A weekend that starts a break during the season of spring. Spring break, can't wait, most would say. I blush in wonderment in thinking of the future of the week.
But then I remember who I won't have with me, and he's standing at my locker. I open it as he leans against his own open one which stands next to mine. Pictures of himself and me, our friends, and all his academic achievements line it.
"Hello Beauty," he says, before wrapping his arms around me in a hug.
"Hey Brains," I reply. Our nicknames for each other make us smile. I'm his beauty with a brain, he's my brain that's a beauty. I turn to him and place my arms around his neck.
"So, last day before spring break. You ready?" I sigh.
"Not for you to leave,"
"Idina, I know it'll be hard. We haven't really been apart,"
"And now everyone's leaving me."
"That's not true,"
"Yeah, it is. Riley and Maya are going to Philly to stay at Riley's grandparent's house, and you're going to New Mexico to see the space museum,"
"But you'll be at an amazing writer's camp, right here at home," I smile at him, "plus you've still got Lucas."
"What about me now?" the cowboy asks walking up to us with Maya and Riley hot on his trail, "I heard my name," he says tipping an invisible cowboy's hat.
"Yeah Huckleberry, because you need something you make you more of a Bucky McBoing Boing," Maya says.
"If that's what you want darlin'," he says, tipping the invisible hat towards her.
"Ooooh," she replies then sighs knowing she'll never get to him, "Idina, don't be sad, Riles and I are just a text or phone call away."
"Monday, Monday is the day you all leave me," I walk over to Lucas and he puts his elbow on my shoulder since I'm slightly shorter than he, "Except for you Treetop."
"Yup, I already went to Texas last semester, and this is my home now. Why would I want to leave it?"
"Exactly," the bell rings, "Idina, we gotta go to algebra, you ready?"
"Yeah, you guys have theater right?"
"Yup, fun," Maya says with sarcasm, "Let's go Pumpkin," she and Riley start to walk off, "Farkle!"
"Coming!" he shouts, before giving me a kiss on the cheek, "see you later Lady." he runs off after them.
As we walk to algebra I stop and Lucas looks back at me, having taken a few steps forward before realizing I halted.
"What's wrong Idina?"
"Promise me you'll never leave me."
"What?" I walk closer to him.
"Lucas Friar, I'm calling you your name and not one of my amazingly awesome nicknames for you because this is important," I sigh, "I love Riley and Maya, and my best friend Smackle, but right here, right now, I'm asking you to promise me you will be my best friend, my brother, forever."
"I promise," I smile at him, "I love you, Sis,"
"I love you to Luc," I reply, and we walk to class. When I sit down my eyes light up with an idea.
"What?" Lucas whispers to me. I look at him.
"I need your help with something."
